Michael's obituary

Dr. Michael LeRoy Potts, known to many as a gentle giant with a heart as vast as his stature, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025 at the age of 74. Born on April 15, 1950 in Long Beach, California, Michael’s life was a testament to faith, service, and unwavering kindness.

A gifted dentist by trade, Michael touched countless lives, not only through his meticulous care but through the laughter and warmth he shared with every patient who entered his practice. His hands healed, but it was his compassionate heart that left an indelible mark. A proud graduate of Loma Linda University, Michael went on to give back to his alma mater by dedicating over 15 years to teaching dental implant techniques. He generously shared his expertise, shaping the next generation of dentists with the same passion and dedication that defined his own career. Michael’s groundbreaking contributions earned him the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Implant Dentistry in 2022, celebrating his role in advancing the field with unmatched artistry and vision.

As a devoted member of the Adventist church, Michael lived his faith boldly. His dedication to his community in Camarillo was unparalleled—offering his time, talent, and compassion to those in need. Whether organizing free dentistry events, mentoring young members of the church, or simply lending a helping hand, Michael embodied the values he held dear. He was a dedicated member of the Camarillo Sunrise Rotary Club since 1985, and continuously embodied their motto “service above self.”

Though tall in height, it was Michael’s humility and humor that truly stood out. Quick with a joke, a warm smile, or an encouraging word, he brought joy to everyone he met. Those who knew him best often said he had a way of making you feel like you were the most important person in the room.

Life tested Michael’s strength when his beloved home was lost to the Camarillo Mountain Fire just months before his passing. Yet even in the face of loss, he remained steadfast, leaning on his faith and finding solace in the love of his family and friends.

Michael was preceded in death by his father, Ed Potts, whose legacy in dentistry inspired Michael’s career, and by his mother, Gail Potts.

Michael is survived by his devoted wife, Susie, and their two sons, Zachary and Derek, who both proudly continue the Potts family tradition in dentistry. He also leaves behind daughters-in-law Bonnie and Rachelle, sister Janet Wager, and his cherished grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy of love and laughter: Allie, Jelina, Corbin, Amelia, Gunnar, and Vienna.

Though he is no longer with us, Michael’s spirit lives on in the lives he touched. As Psalm 37:23-24 reminds us, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.” May we all strive to live as he did—faithful, kind, and full of love.

A celebration of Michael’s life will be held on Sunday, February 2 at 10:00 AM at the Camarillo Seventh-Day Adventist Church (3975 Las Posas Road). His family invites all who knew him to join in honoring the remarkable man he was. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Camarillo Seventh-Day Adventist Church of which Mike was a member for over 50 years. A memorial fund has been created in his name at https://adventistgiving.org/d….
