Mark was the first peer I met in my life who had wisdom. Like all of us growing up, you knew who in your class was smart and did well in math, english, history, etc. But when I met Mark in CPYC’s junior sailing program, it became immediately apparent to me that Mark has something else - wisdom. Mark not only knew the right answer, but he had a way of guiding you through asking questions and getting you to weigh and reject alternatives so that you came up with the answer or saw things his way.

I also never heard Mark speak badly of anyone in his life. That doesn’t mean that he liked or agreed with everyone. But I don’t recall Mark ever saying anything malicious or derogatory about anyone - a real testament to his character in this day and age.

I regret that the obligations of career and family caused us to be apart for much of our adult lives. Reconnecting a few years ago I was honored that Mark invited me to crew for him on his Atlantic and especially at the 2022 Nationals. Even with a few quirks of judgment that we would later understand were due to his tumor, Mark exhibited great poise, intelligence, judgment, and most of all leadership. That continued as he finished the sailing season after his diagnosis. For all of us, sailing is not just a hobby, but often a metaphor for how we are in our whole lives. Mark sailed that season the best I had ever seen.

We consider ourselves fortunate that we have had Mark and the entire Foster family in our lives beginning with Andrew and Kyle’s wedding, to our hikes in CA and CT, to our family dinners, to seeing him walking Bridgette down the aisle and thoroughly participating in and enjoying her wedding, and having the Fosters generously sharing last Christmas with us. Mark may have been quiet but his presence was definitely felt. Mark will be missed but never forgotten.
