Maritza's obituary

With deep love and heavy hearts, we share the passing of Maritza Rubio, a woman whose kindness, warmth, and adventurous spirit touched the lives of everyone who knew her. Born in Los Angeles, Maritza was the second of the four Mejia siblings—a classic older sister, loving, protective, and always leading the way. She grew up in Echo Park, surrounded by family, neighborhood friends, and her beloved cousins.

Maritza attended John Marshall High School, where her incredible talent on the drill team caught the eye of star athlete Vince Rubio—the love of her life. They married when she was just 19, embarking on a life of adventure together. Their greatest joy was their only child, daughter, Adriana, because as Maritza always said, “I got it right the first time.”

Her home was always open, filled with love, music, and celebration. A natural caretaker, Maritza dedicated herself to making sure those around her were happy and cared for. Whether she was hosting a gathering, offering a helping hand, or simply showing up for those who needed her, she was the person you could always count on. Her generosity knew no bounds—she spent her vacation time on medical missions in Mexico, donated blood every other month for years, supported cancer patients and caregivers, and welcomed anyone who needed a little help.

Yet, with all her selflessness, she never missed out on the fun. Maritza found joy in traveling, hiking, live music, completing full marathons, going to concerts, and cheering on the Dodgers—always with a beer in one hand and her radio in the other to listen to Vin Scully from the stands.

Maritza became a grandma in 2015 and a few years later, decided to retire from her 38 year career at Otis Elevator to help care for her grandkids. Stevie and Maddie became her world, bringing her endless joy. She always said they were the greatest gift life had given her, and she showed up for them in every possible way.

Maritza’s love extended to so many—her family, lifelong friends, Otis family, and her fun-loving concert crew. She was the godmother so many wished for, the friend everyone adored, and, as one friend recently put it, “the light I loved to be around.”

She lived fully, loved deeply, and left the world better simply by being in it. Though we will miss her beyond words, we will carry her love, laughter, and kindness with us always.

Rest easy, Mitzi. You were the best of us.
