Llyn's obituary
As a unifying force for good, Llyn Evans Carter was a dedicated educator, engaged community member and a joyous individual who shared her opinions and her love openly and freely.
Llyn passed July 31, 2024 at the age of 71 after a decade’s long battle with Leukemia. Her family and friends take comfort in knowing she no longer suffers and she was able, in her final years, to participate in an experimental drug trial helping advance research efforts at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University.
She is predeceased by her father, Robert W. Evans, mother June Salneu Evans, and brother David Everett Evans. Llyn is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Robert T. Carter, sister Candy Pellechio, brother Robert W. Evans II (Cynthia), daughter Marie Carter Ballman, son-in-law Shane Ballman, grandsons Theodore and Findley, and several much-loved nieces and nephews.
Llyn was born in Philadelphia, PA and attended Upper Dublin High School. She is the proud graduate of Randolph-Macon Women’s College, where she earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree, and Temple University where she received her Master’s in Education.
As a devoted educator, Llyn spent her teaching career with the Woodhaven School and the Philadelphia School District, serving as the Dean of Students and Teachers’ Union representative at Thomas Creighton School (a K-8 school). In her retirement, Llyn cherished the time she spent with her grandsons introducing them to the magical world of reading and learning.
Throughout her life, Llyn was a committed community volunteer. She served in leadership positions as a member of the Memorial Church of St Luke’s an Episcopal church in Philadelphia, as a Captain in the Civil Air Patrol, and as an active representative of the Philadelphia Teachers Union. For nearly twenty years, Llyn led programming for the Girls’ Friendly Society, an international non-profit that works to empower girls – helping develop their full potential through trainings, confidence building exercises and work opportunities. As a regional and national board member and USA President of Girls’ Friendly, Llyn traveled with girls from the Philadelphia area to international leadership conferences in South Korea, Australia, Ireland, Wales, and the U.S.
In retirement, Llyn and her husband moved to Douglasville, GA to be closer to their cherished daughter and her family. Nearly immediately, Llyn sought out volunteer opportunities in her new community channeling her passion and energy into Douglas County’s Women Democrats’ efforts to register and mobilize voters.
A celebration of Llyn’s life is planned for Sat, Sept 7, 2024 at 1:00pm at the Memorial Church of St. Lukes, 1946 Welsh Rd, Philadelphia, PA 19115. There will be lite refreshments afterwards in the parish hall. The family would like to thank Dr. Anthony Hunter and the entire team at Emory Hospital Cancer Center for their outstanding care and their continued quest for cancer treatments.
