Leo's obituary

Leo C. Withers, Jr. of San Francisco, California passed away on May 7, 2025. He was 80.

Leo was born on August 28,1944 to the late Alice M. Withers (née Thomas) and Leo C. Withers, Sr. The second of three children, Leo grew up alongside his siblings in the close-knit community surrounding their family home in Berkeley, CA. He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1962. After traveling and residing on the east coast for a few years, Leo eventually settled in San Francisco, his longtime home.

Leo lived a vibrant and adventurous life, both personally and professionally. His career in the airline industry spanned over 30 years, beginning with Western Airlines and ending with his retirement from Delta Airlines in 2003. His work led to several enduring friendships, but also inspired his lifelong love of travel. Over the years, he visited more than 40 countries and embraced new experiences wherever he went. He was particularly fond of Hawaii, which he and his mother both visited on numerous occasions.

Beyond his travels, Leo had many passions. He was a former runner who competed in multiple marathons, a Hollywood movie aficionado, an avid reader with a sizeable home library, and a dedicated pen pal who never failed to send handwritten letters and cards—typically decorated with colorful stickers. He was also an outstanding cook and a connoisseur of good food and wine, with a particular fondness for champagne. Over the years he hosted legendary gatherings—especially his milestone birthday celebrations—that brought together family and friends for lasting memories.

Leo is survived by his sisters, Cecilia White and Kathleen Mitchell; cousins Albert Williams, Nina Lewis, Robin Lewis, Steve Morris, and Kim Kittson-Morris; niece Regina Rodgers and husband Stephen Mitchell; nephew Matthew Rodgers; and his extended family in Ohio and Southern California.

The family will host a private Celebration of Life in Leo’s honor in San Francisco.
