Laura's obituary
Laura Mathieu, 57, native of Homewood, IL, born on January 29, 1966, sadly passed away on May 26, 2023. Laura was a graduate of Homewoood-Flossmoor High School and attended Prairie State College. Laura was a compassionate, beautiful woman who leaves behind a family who cherished her deeply and feel the loss of her bright presence in their lives. Laura is survived by her brother, John (Deborah) Mathieu; her sister, Mary Mathieu; nieces Rachel Mathieu-Sanchez, Amber Mathieu; nephew, Michael Mathieu; grand-niece, Raven Sanchez; Aunts, including her God-mother, Jeanne Long; many cousins, including Molly (David) Horan-Parry and Sean (Blythe) Horan. Laura was preceded in death by her father, William Mathieu, mother, Joanne McCarthy, Grandparents, many Aunts, Uncles, and cousins as well as her sister-in-law, Lisa Spoor Mathieu.
Laura will be forever remembered as a kind woman with a bright smile. Laura showed love and empathy to all throughout her life, even helping care for both of her parents in their later years as her health deteriorated.
Laura had many talents, aside from her amazing voice, which at a three octave range was always at perfect pitch, Laura also excelled at sketching, needlepoint and painting. Among her many accomplishments, Laura sang with renowned musicians Buddy Guy and Junior Wells at the Checkerboard Lounge showcasing her exceptional vocal talent. Laura played "Timid Frieda" in the local production of "Jacques Brel is Alive and Living in Paris," delighting the audience.
Laura also displayed a deep passion for social justice. In high school, Laura helped organize a protest against nuclear weapons. Later in life she helped organize a large protest in Chicago on the second anniversary of the illegal war in Iraq. Laura attended many protests, helped phone bank for politicians and did whatever she could to help make this a better world.
Unfortunately, dementia took Laura from her family and the world at too early an age, with symptoms beginning in her mid 40s. Despite the challenges she faced, she continued to give her love and support to those around her.
