I was very saddened to recently learn of Julie's death.  I grew up next door to the Bates family and Julie was a close friend for all my childhood and early adulthood.  We had lots of adventures together- sailing, beach explorations, building "camps" in vacant lots etc. and spent a great deal of time in each other's houses.    After graduate school I moved to Maryland and so we had only infrequent visits, but kept in touch by letter.  I owe Julie a huge debt as it was she who introduced me to my wonderful husband, Steve, to whom I was married for 61 years.  Sadly Steve died in Dec. 2023 two days before Julie.  I finally wrote to her to tell her of his death last summer and worried when I did not get a reply - with good reason it turned out.  My condolences to Nate and all her family.  She was a wonderful person.

Hiking on our Santa Fe meet up with Julie — with JoanneRichard & Julie
Idaho: River of No Return Wilderness

I met Julie through her son Nate.  I have always admired their mother-son relationship, it was the healthiest I've ever witnessed. I loved going backpacking with them - I'll never forget finding Bolletes in the Olympics with them. Julie was an amazing chef - I loved canning tuna tapenade and making mango chutney with them. And she knew how to eat! I always knew we would go someplace delicious when I met with her. So happy to have know sucha great example of how to live well. For example: when we went rafting down the Colorado river, we had so much joy about the beauty of the world together - a quick hit of wonder and awe shared with one of my heros.

 Kampai Julie Boxer!

I don't seem to have words to describe losing Julie from our life. Sad and feeling the whole in my world where she once was.  She was a Blessing to us and I am very grateful for her love, energy and friendship.

Joanne, Julie and I spent so much time together - climbing, hiking, rafting, laughing and talking. Of course, there was always lots of cooking and eating. It seems very hard to think of that process of many adventures with her has ended. I'm missing her a lot as I write.

Though her I was able to meet and spend time with her son Nate. He was always the joy of her life and a Blessing to get to know.

Julie was the one holding the rope tight when I feel 25 ft when she and I were climbing R&D in Icicle Creek, Leavenworth.  She is the reason I am still here today.

The photos I just posted didn't all show up with the captions.  They were from our trips to Santa Fe, NM in May 2022, rafting the Middle Fork Salmon River in Idaho in July 2017 with Dee Kinsey and others, and biking at Vail Pass, Colorado, July 2021
