Joe and I were soccer parents as our kids grew up.  He and I worked together for over 20 years.  On campus we taught a class together.  Overseas we had several adventures together!  He invited me to join his course in Cuba and to add natural resources .  I invited him to join our team in Bolivia - he and I traveled to the Amazon there and had several adventures in the forests!  Later I included him in my course in Sikkim.  We camped at 16,000 feet and visited sites including monasteries, and tea plantation,  It was there that I introduced him to riding on top of the bus!

To Joe's Family, I enjoyed knowing Joe and sharing the memories of my parents' honeymoon to Cuba in 1936 through their scrapbook. And my several visits to his home one where I purchase a primitive Havana street scene which I am daily enjoying, just to name a few remembrances.

Joe, together with Gilda, at my show.

Papa Joe, may the ancestors be kind to you. My Condolences Mama Gilda, Michael, and Cristina.

A strong  hug from your Castelbuono cousins,  we’re very sorry ..
As a faculty member of the VT Department of History  I travelled with Joe on one of his early trips to Cuba where I benefited from his many insights. He also helped me return with a stray kitten that became a part of our family for many years.

Dear Gilda, Michael, and Cristina:

When I received Gilda’s message last night, I could not believe it! I am deeply saddened at the news of Joe’s passing, and send my heartfelt condolences to all of you. Joe was a great man, a first-rate scholar, and a true friend.

I have fond memories of those early years at Iowa, when we were neighbors on Brown Street, and of the birth of Cristina. After many years of not being in touch, we reconnected during my visit to your home in Blacksburg. I greatly admired Joe’s work on the urban history of Havana; we had lively exchanges on the carriages of old Havana, and what the city was like during the colonial period. He was generous and inspiring and helped me in my own work.

I am sorry now that I did not join him on one of his bird-watching expeditions.

Les mando un muy sentido pésame. Están en mi pensamiento y oraciones.  Abrazos a todos,

Adriana
