Sorry to hear about Jays passing. I’m one of Bernice Spoonheim Lynch’s sons and I was trying to track him down. May he rest in peace.

Sending love and hugs to you Isa, Joel, Tait, Sara and all who knew and loved Jay. The service was wonderful -- it was so Jay! My dad (Steve) and I watched the livestream together (thanks to all who made that possible). Remembering all I learned from Pastor Jay (both at Christ Lutheran in Long Beach, Calif. and Lutheran Church of the Servant in Santa Fe, N.M. (remember confirmation classes with your dad in your unfinished basement, Joel?!) and celebrating the blessing of him. "The best is yet to come!" -Kristi(n) Stork

Hello Isa, our condolences to you and the family. Jay's devoted ministry touched and inspired so many. We have special memories of Jay and you developing The Lutheran Church of the Servant in Santa Fe and our Holly and your kiddos at Santa Fe High. And we were all born and raised in North Dakota, too. Lincoln retired from the ministry in May 1997 and we moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where he died peacefully at home on January 14, 2020.

His Love, Joy and Peace  be with you all,

Ramona Leer and daughter, Holly Leer

What an awesome person and human being! I work where Jay and Isa Live and love both of them very much! I transported Jay to numerous appointments and would sat and chat with him on occasions in places I saw him in the building! He was so loving and sincere and caring and I would talk with him about humanity and what it  was to have a responsibility to love others and boy did he love others! I would say his message as a pastor was Come! Come all come one to Christ our Saviour who loves and adores his creation and wants to help us to be better, love more, create hope joy and laughter and know that our Saviour loves and does not condemn us! I am a better  person because of my relationship with Jay Spoonhiem and I am so thankful I met him and Isa!!

Isa and family,

You helped us in SF when we first married, and my RC husband (who still doesn’t attend church) would say to this day that Pastor Jay made the biggest impression on him as a true believer in Jesus! It was an important first step, and I thank you and him for that!

Our sincere condolences!

Ruth (& Carl-Michal) Krawczyk

What I remember most about Pastor Jay was his smile, his joy, his love and his great hugs.  One special memory is the long drive he made to visit me when I was in the U.S. because my step-dad had a serious health crisis.  He has such a big and pastoral heart for his flock and I was privileged to be part of that flock at Christ Lutheran in Long Beach.  I am so glad for you Isa and your kids and grandkids that you were there to usher Jay into his the "best is yet to come" new life.

We were blessed to have Pastor Jay as our friend, mentor and pastor at CLC. He always shared so much joy, love and compassion.

Jay and Isa welcomed us into their home on our trip to Santa Fe, even though we were just friends of friends of theirs.   He was a wonderful person with a huge heart
Jay was such a kind man. When I was a teen, he and Isa treated me as a part of the family. Everyone was always welcome to Jay in the church and in his home. He will be missed.

Jay and I were both born in the Good Samaritan hospital in Williston,  ND a few months apart.  His father was the Great Northern Depot agent in Williston at the time.  They later moved to Breckenridge, MN where Jay’s father was again the depot agent.

Jay and I attended the ND State School of Science  (SSS) starting in September 1949.  The SSS is across the Red River from Breckenridge in Wahpeton, ND.  We became best buddies as soon as we met.

In February 1951, when the Korean War was raging, we enlisted in the Navy together. It turned out, much to our dismay, that we were assigned to different parts of the world - Jay to the Atlantic and I to the Pacific.

A few years later after college and other activities, we got together again.  While I was studying at UC Berkeley for my PhD in physics, Jay enrolled at the Lutheran Seminary in Berkeley. He worked part-time at the UC Radiation Laboratory where I was doing research.  So we again spent time together.  And this is where Jay me his lovely wife-to-be Isa.  Jay was very popular and made many friends at the Lab.

Over the years, we were able to meet at various places.  Jay baptized both my Children, Jan and Tanja, when they were in California. Our last visits were in Ok City in 2021 and 2022 when I was touring in my RV.  We spoke quite often on the phone.  I alreay miss him a great deal.

Isa, heartfelt condolences to you and the family. Sig and I often talked about our time in Santa Fe with you, Jay and the family— those were fun times!     Sig passed away in 2023, sending you love and strength on this tough journey. ,Louise

Isa, Tait, Joel, and Sara,

My deepest sympathy on the passing of Jay (Pastor Spoonheim).

I think of your family often, especially on Saturdays when I am in the church office doing the bulletin. (Yes, I am still the secretary at  Our Savior's.) Jay and Isa will always hold a special place in my heart, as they were such an inspiration in my faith and always were very encouraging in the raising of my children.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families during this difficult time.

God Bless,

Cindy Berger

Sara we’re so sorry for your loss. Sending love and light and can’t wait to give you a big hug.
I didn't have the privilege of meeting Jay until he was in his 90s. But his energy for life and helping others was more in line with a much younger person. He was a joy to share time with and his knowledge, compassion and witty remarks made every minute enjoyable. My life was enriched by the time my son and I were able to spend with Jay, and the amazing family he led. Many blessings to the Spoonheim family during this time and beyond.

Isa and Family,  I am so sad about Jay’s passing.  I met hm in Charley’s about a year ago where we had a long talk and I left feeling that I had made a friend.  He was so kind with a wonderful sense of humor.  I doubt he ever met a stranger and I will miss seeing him.  I am keeping all of you in my prayers.  Dianne Rosenquist
