My sincere and heartfelt condolences on Isabella’s passing.   Working with David for many years, I met Isabella a few times and also heard about her many activities.   My two young daughters heard the stories about Isabella the mom, professional and ultra athlete.   She is an inspiration in many ways.

I am so sorry to hear about your lovely Isabella. Everyone who met her loved her.  I remember David and Isabella dancing at Oliver and my wedding. David wore a handsome suit and Isabella wore a beautiful little black cocktail dress.  I remember thinking how bright both of our futures were going to be. Cancer seems to choose the brightest stars. It is up to those who are left behind to keep them shining for them. We are their legacy and their voices in the darkness. May you find peace in your grief.

- Susanne Giller (Oliver's widow/ Peter & Renate Giller's daughter-in-law)

I was so sorry to hear about Isabella's passing.  Ever since meeting her at law school and working  closely with her on the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law I had tremendous admiration for her and all her achievements surrounded by such a wonderful family!   David, I fondly remember attending your wedding and hearing my wife Sharon sing Ave Maria in such a glorious setting and getting to know you and meeting so many in her extended family.  While I hadn’t seen her in many years before her passing, I followed her journey on FB and take great pride that I knew such an incredible person.  Sharon and I send our love and deepest sympathies.❤️

David and family,

Unfortunately I didn’t know Isabella, but clearly her life journey has positively impacted so many and continues to do so, including me. Just reading about her has been inspiring. I sincerely hope knowing this brings you some comfort and peace in this difficult time.

Deb Fry (NRG)

I watched the memorial on line and was there in spirt. Thank you for sharing Isabella’s indefatigable, undeniable, beautiful, inspiring spirit, and for the incredible love you all share for each other and, of course, her. Your love as a family humbles and moves me and I know so many others. Love, Matt

What an extraordinary human and a force to be reckoned with.  My deepest condolences to you and your family.  Isabella has clearly inspired so many, and her legacy will live on.

I am so sorry for your tremendous loss. Isabella was a force and I hope you take great comfort knowing that she lived her life to the utmost fullest and on her terms.  It was a blessing to know her even if it was for a short time. May she Rest in Peace.

I'm so sad that I won't be able to attend the memorial service for Isabella, but I wanted to share a memory that may be especially meaningful to the other Princetonians in her family. I graduated from Princeton in 1982 and only met Isabella in 1987, when we both started at Columbia Law School. We were in the same 1L section. In a final exam in Torts, it became apparent that a large number of students had the exact exam questions and the professor's model answers, in this open book exam where one was allowed to bring in study materials. This was an innocent error on all sides; some of the law journals kept files on old exams and model answers that they made available to other students for study purposes. The elderly professor didn't realize that the exam he had written several years earlier had been retained, and he reused it.

After the exam, Isabella approached me, very upset. She told me that she was one of the students who had the original exam and model answer, and she had not been able to bring herself to use them on her own exam, BECAUSE OF PRINCETON'S HONOR CODE. And she wondered if she had been naive and foolish.

Of course, I immediately told her that NO, she had been honorable and had acted with integrity, and that I admired and applauded her for that. As it turned out, the law school ended up making the class pass/fail for us all, but none of us expected that at the time. Isabella had no way to know that she hadn't given up a competitive advantage.

Beyond her obvious courage and integrity, Isabella was a delightful person in law school, fun and friendly. I moved to Atlanta shortly after we graduated and we lost contact, but I've followed her exploits with interest and concern. What a remarkable human being she was. My warm and sincere condolences to her family.

It may be once in a lifetime that you have a moment that changes your life. I was blessed to have that moment occur when I met Isabella for the first time. She changed my life and inspired me to be a better person. I've met a lot of folks but I'm so lucky to have received this gift from Isabella. It was through Isabella and her family's impact on the world that inspired me to set up our little foundation. I will always remember how kind she was to me and how she changed my view of the world.
When I think of Isabella, I think of her in Hong Kong swimming 100 laps a day in the Queens Garden pool. It was clear to any observer that here was a remarkable woman who would never let the grass grow under her feet. I am sad for you all, but grateful that I had a chance to know her, even if briefly.

Dear David,

Sincere condolences to you and your family. Judy and I have so many fond & wonderful memories of our various interactions with Isabella. These cherished memories are truly a blessing to us and to all her friends & loved ones. We will miss Isabella.  May her soul rest in perfect peace.

Judy and Oye Olukotun

To Isabella de la Houssaye* Ultramarathoner, Triathlete, Explorer

A mother, athlete extraordinare,

Across the world, you’ve traveled to compete,

And lead a life unique, special and rare

Running the miles for goals you must complete.

You taught your children how to problem solve,

And helped them to excel in wondrous feats,

On nature’s pinnacles, where with extreme resolve,

They have survived and thrived with no defeats.

Then fate decreed you face your own brave test,

Which with the greatest will you must comply,

With every challenge, there’s an Everest,

And what you taught, you now must self-apply.

Your confident soul, a glorious shield,

That shows those who love you, you’ll never yield.

Written for my dear friend Isabella on her birthday shortly after she learned about her diagnosis.

What an inspirational person Isabella is - along with the whole of the family she leaves us all with.  I'll always remember first meeting her while venturing around the streets of Haiti -- hearing her conviction about right and wrong and what needed to be done.  All of us in the old NRG family at Clearway send our love to the Crane family. We thank you all for the inspiration you have given us...and continue to.
The world is a better place for her having lived  in it. My most sincere condolences to her remarkable family, and to all those whose lives she touched directly.   What an extraordinary human.
Our deepest sympathies to the Crane family. Isabella was an inspiration and an example of how to live life to the fullest. We were fortunate to have crossed her path. Sending our love
Bottomless respect and awe for Isabella, and deepest condolences to her amazing family.
We are all sending you lots of love. Isabella was an amazing Mom, daughter, adventurer, business professional and most importantly giving cherished soul. All our love, Beth, Joe, Janet and our Mom.
Sending so much love to the family and all whose lives were touched by Isabella (if you met her, your life was touched by her!) - Mark and I will forever be impacted by the times we shared with Isabella, climbing Mt Washington or paddling the Tuolumne River and will forever be inspired  by her powerful spirit and zeal for life and love, which will no doubt carry on in spirit and in those who knew and loved her.
