Attending the University of Iowa in 1966-70, I met Hank through my brother Jim. It was the next year, as a sophomore, that Hank and I became friends. He told me I would need leadership skills no matter what I did for work after school. He was so persuasive that I joined the Leadership Developement Program with him, and that was the start of a journey in personal growth. Hank, I and many of our friends worked in personal and interpersonal growth programs along with our college studies. We learned and taught about accepting ourselves and others, being open within relationships, embracing diversity, taking interpersonal risks and puting a value on intimacy. These meaningful pursuits were balanced with a lot of fun, especially parties. It was well known that Hank threw the best parties. He would prepare for days, throwing school aside while he spent hours on the phone, making sure evryone was coming. Recently, when Hank and I were reminiscing about college days, we agreed that a foundation was laid down at Iowa that helped us in our relationships, including the 55 year friendship between us. Hank's Wedding - Hank and I happened to live in the same cities for much of our careers - Boston & the San Francisco Bay Area. Out of college, we both moved to Boston and cemented a life-long friendship. I was the Best Man in his wedding to Ellen in 1974. It was a big, fancy wedding, and we had a blast! The photo is one of many toasts.
Hank, my brother, Gary, and I lived together one year as undergrads at the U of Iowa. We all stayed friends through our undergrad and grad school years at Iowa. This photo is Hank and his girlfriend, Becky, at a party at our apartment.
