George's obituary

George Edward Ulm W9EVT was born December 4th, 1930, in the then-free city of Danzig (now known as Gdansk, Poland). George relocated to the United States with his father, Erich, and mother, Delyla, at age two. At the early age of seven, George became a licensed ham radio operator. His promise in amateur radio became immediately evident when, as a just boy, George used his impressive Morse code talents to transmit notices of soldiers' deaths during WWII. Public service via HAM radio started early for George and only continued to blossom over the course of his incredible life.

George was a well-traveled man of seemingly endless interests, ambitions, and talents. In addition to his success as an entrepreneur and businessman, George was a war veteran, a teacher for the Navy Air Corp, a ship's captain, an inventor, and amateur radio innovator. George's astonishing adventures took place all over the globe, and he easily made long-time friends wherever he landed. In addition to various locations within the United States, George resided in Mexico, Europe, South Africa, Australia, Antiqua, and St. Kitts.

While George was a dynamic man who embraced adventure and change, notably, his passion for HAM radio remained consistent and ever-growing across his long and fascinating life. George first began learning about HAM radio from Karl Hassel at age five. George's passion for using amateur radio as both a public service tool and a hobby held strong until he took his last breath at age 92. George was an instrumental figure within HAM radio community who was revered as a foremost expert with a near encyclopedic command of radio-related knowledge. He was well respected as a mentor, innovator, role model, and trusted friend to amateur radio operators worldwide. While maybe most fondly remembered for his kind and generous demeanor and remarkably entertaining story-telling abilities, it is also worth noting that, over the course of his life, George amassed the largest collection of working HAM radios in the world, which remains proudly displayed in his world-class HAM station on Washington Island, Wisconsin.

George passed away peacefully on December 21st, 2022, in Sturgeon Bay Hospital, surrounded by family. He remained impressively independent, healthy, and active (both on and off the airwaves) until just two months before his passing. George is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan. He also leaves behind his sons, Scott and Erich, his daughters, Amy Delyla and Lauren, and his grandchildren, Alex, Shane, Ella, and Levi. A celebration of life to honor George's incredible journey and his remarkable devotion to the amateur radio field was held on July 22nd, 2023, at his home and adjacent radio station at Greengate Farm on Washington Island, Wisconsin. George has been memorialized through the Cycle 25 Fund created by the Northern California DX Foundation.
