George's obituary

George K.M. “Moonie” Lee, a loving husband, father, grandfather, Army veteran, and retired Board of Water Supply supervisor, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2022. He was born in Kuka’iau, Hawaii on February 22, 1927, and moved to Lanai in 1936. He eventually settled in Honolulu, Hawaii where he graduated from McKinley High School and met the love of his life, Marian Choy, at a Kaimuki dance.

On August 10, 1945, George entered the army as a Teletype Operator managing cryptographic and transmission security and was honorably discharged on December 31, 1946. He later reconnected and married his sweetheart Marian on August 7, 1947, with whom he shared a profound love until her passing on January 29, 1997.

George was resilient throughout his life and overcame many hardships. Though deeply saddened, he continued to maintain a positive outlook bringing so much love and joy to his family, friends, and people from all walks of life. He eventually moved to Kulana Hale where he enjoyed participating in many social events and formed strong bonds of enduring friendships.

George especially enjoyed time with his family and loved visiting his son’s and daughter’s families on the mainland and traveled frequently with them on numerous vacations. He also pursued his second passion… golf! Quite an astute golfer himself, proudly making a “hole-in-one”, his favorite part were drinks and snacks at the 19th hole with his dear golf buddies. George also loved playing Hanafuda, physical fitness, history, current news, sports (especially the Yankees and Tiger Woods), and, most of all, Hawaiian and classical music. A talented ukulele player, he also had a beautiful singing voice that could easily transition in and out of melody and harmony. His appreciation for music would later make a deep impact on his children and grandchildren.

A generous and warm soul, George is survived by his son Steve and his wife Iris, his daughter Kathy and her husband Chip, his grandchildren Bryan, Stephanie, Tabitha, Kiernan, and Cameron, and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 of his 11 siblings, his brother Dennis Lee and sister Rose Chung.

He will fondly be remembered for his sense of fun, gentleness, kindness, charm, quiet strength, and easy-going nature. His favorite terms “whatevah” and “aloha from paradise” will forever bring a smile to our faces. George had a special way about him that made you feel you had a friend for life. He touched so many people and will be deeply missed by many. We are all so much better having known George. Throughout his life, he served as an inspiration, a light that has always shown brightly in this world, and that will continue to shine in our hearts forever.

George will finally be laid to rest with his sweetheart, Marian, at a private ceremony.
