Eva's obituary
Eva Funk Moeller, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Costa Mesa, California on March 17, 2023.
She was born the youngest of nine, to the late Mifflin and Emma Funk, May 10, 1926, in Davenport, Iowa. Mifflin left the family before Eva was born, and her mother raised her in a loving and encouraging environment. Eva graduated from Davenport High School in 1944 and was later hired as an office assistant at the school.
She married the Don E. Moeller in 1947. They moved to Peoria, IL so Don could attend Bradley University on the G.I. Bill. Once Don graduated from college, they returned to Davenport where Eva returned to work at Davenport High School. While in Davenport they had a wonderful group of friends who where know as “The Group” and a host of memories and hysterical stories have been shared about these years. They welcomed their only child, Jann Denise into their world on November 13, 1964.
In 1965 Don accepted a job as the Ceramics teacher at Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, California. They left their friends and drove a VW bug to California with a 9-month-old daughter and Emma (Eva’s mother) in tow.
They moved into their forever home on Halloween 1965. Thus began Don and Eva 58 years of life in Southern California. Mom often wondered what took them so long to make the move to California.
Eva worked in higher education for most of the time in California, for both Coastline Community College and Orange Coast College. Don and Eva made a new group of friends and welcomed friends from Iowa whenever they visited. They celebrated life’s special moments with gratefulness. Don passed a year before their 60th wedding anniversary.
In 2009 Eva found companionship with a high school friend Harlan Moore. They enjoyed spending time with family and friends, entertaining and reflecting on all life had given them. After Harlan’s passing in 2017, Eva continued to entertain, tend to her garden, and enjoy her gin & tonics or wine with friends. She was driving her convertible BMW with the top down and a Sinatra CD playing loudly until February 15, 2023. She loved trips to Vegas between Christmas and New Year’s (a tradition that began in the 1980s) with her daughter Jann, son-in-law John, and friends Gayle and Ed Burke.
Eva was a devout follower of Christ, a Roosevelt Democrat who became a Reagan Republican, and an amazing mom, aunt, mentor, and friend.
She is survived by daughter Jann Rowe (John), niece Winn Stegmeir (Chuck) and her favorite nephew Tom Whitaker along with many other nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand nephews, and numerous friends.
Eva worked as an accomplished executive administrator in the private and public sector with a talent for organization that has been replicated by the many that she mentored. She took that same skill set to entertaining friends and family. Any event that she was involved in become truly memorable. Fun, great food and conversation were always the hallmarks of an evening with Eva. She was fondly referred to as “The General” because she know exactly what to do and when to do it for friends and family.
Mom's spirit lives on thru all who knew and loved her.
