Doug loved visiting City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco. He was a voracious reader and made a point of stopping in every bookstore and buying a book or three.

B was a cool teacher. When I took his film class, I was certain I wouldn't like "old" movies and films in black and white, but I was so wrong and I will always appreciate his enthusiasm to share his insight and knowledge.

So saddened by the loss. B helped me a lot in my Senior year and supported me in my video endeavors, I interviewed everyone in my class because of his encouragement. He also kept in touch for many years after high school and even after I moved to Washington in 2005. He touched so many lives and I'm grateful to have had to opportunity to be his student and friend.

I’m so sad to learn of Doug’s passing. He was such a kind, generous and wonderful human! I feel so lucky that I got to work with him and know him. My heart goes out to his family, especially Mia, Sophie, and Pers. Rest in peace Doug, the world feels smaller today. ❤️

This is truly sad to see. Doug and I taught in SWS for the entire time I was there, fourteen years. He was instrumental in getting me hired to the position, seeing that I would be far more than a math teacher in the program. At several points there, we team-taught classes. One was an IAP class on mornings: we shared tea and yoga with the students first period in the morning. It was a blast to put together and to enjoy with them. Doug and I shared a love of both bicycling and jazz, and spent many hours chatting about those after the students had left for the day. His continual excitement at novel things in music, art, literature, and even connections to math was palpable. Man, the laughs we shared. He cared deeply for his students and we shared techniques we could use to help them as needed. Ones we lost troubled us both for a long time. I didn't get to see him much after I left teaching at East, but our last time to chat about everything we chose in the universe, was over tea in Fairbanks. I wouldn't have it any other way. Namaste, Doug.
