I am sorry to hear of Ed's passing. Ed was a talented, caring man who I reconnected with right before the pandemic. I know he was working on a book that would include a passage of my son Denis Penna and The Professor. Denis was helped greatly by the Professor when he was a little boy and Ed has the information I sent him. The prescriptions etc. My reconnection with Ed was a profound meaningful experience. I wish his daughter's the best for their lives and send my deep condolences.

This photo was captured by Alison Bert (a Hastings resident) after a gallery talk for the exhibition "Time Flows Like Water" at (what was at the time) Spring Street Gallery in Hastings. The show was organized by Mansheng Wang and included work by Ruth Berelson, Gina Randazzo, Mansheng and myself. Mansheng organized the exhibit mostly to get Ruth to exhibit her wonderful clay art after a long hiatus. Ed and Ruth met at this gallery talk and developed a friendship that was quite meaningful. Ruth passed in June and the last time I saw Ed was ever so briefly at her memorial. He didn't stay long but I gave him a small print of this image. A few days later he sent this email: "That handshake . . . caught on camera on the Spring Street Exhibit sealed a memorable 11year friendship between Ruth and me, during which Ruth took on to critique all of my most recent books plus my memoir with her sharp eyes and keen mind like none could have done and will ever be able to match.. The day that she passed , I was on my way home from Rockland, passing Irvington thinking of saying hi ,not knowing that she was then already waving me goodbye . This morning I did a mock-up of a book in her spirit, attributing to her great contribution to life . — with Ed Young

The memorial was really moving and beautiful.  I fitting tribute indeed and I was honored to be there. Thank you to Antonia and Ananda and everyone else who helped organize.  I had to arrive late, so I look forward to seeing the video of the first half when it becomes available.  Ed's amazing spirit lives on in his wonderful daughters and influenced all of us who knew him, whether intimately over many years or through the briefest encounters.
Ed's Memorial was an extraordinary, beautiful event. Thank you and congratulations to all the organizers, speakers, musicians, caterers, library, etc. for honoring Ed in such a powerful way. I was so happy to be there.
Although I signed up for video of the memorial service of my elementary classmate Ed Young, the audio dropped off after the music. There was no way I could send message to, so regretably I dropped off. I can see that there was a huge crowd came to the service, a testament for how Ed was a dear friend, collaborator, and mentors to so many of us. Thank you Cathy for posting photos of the service.

this was a last email from Ed..thought it was good to share right now

We are of earth’s elements taken human forms and sharing heaven’s breath for a brief hundred years !

But what a gift it has been!!!!!!

Live well, Nanda and

ENJOY!

Thinking of Ed, the first word that comes to mind is delight. Delight in just about everything. Delight in being alive and experiencing all the wondrous and sometimes difficult challenges life has to offer, delight in the people around him, and of course, Ed being such a delight to be around. It went hand in hand with his endless curiosity and creativity.

I found that delight to be contagious, inspiring those around him to delight in their own curiosity and creativity, inspiring us to be and enjoy being who we each, uniquely, are meant to be, following our intended path.

Ananda’s stories about Ed confirmed that he parented in the same way. (Antonia, I was sorry to miss your words; the sound had cut out.)

Years ago, Margaret Russell, a taichi student of Wolfe’s, asked Ed: if he could go back and give any advice to his younger self, what would it be, and he said “Trust yourself more.”

Those words and his delight in life nourish me daily.

Thank you Antonia, Ananda, Ellyce, Cathy, Amelia, Will, George, and Steve for your words and pictures, and thank you Ed, for being.
