Doris's obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beautiful Mother, Doris Beverly Forrest, in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 81. Doris was born in New York City, the elder daughter of Jack Forrest and Doris (Hamilton) Forrest.

She had an adventure-filled life in New York, Connecticut, Utah, Illinois, Oregon and Alberta. In New York, she spent several years singing at the Light Opera of Manhattan in her favorite Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, often playing the funny best friend. In Alberta, she fell in love with the mountains of Banff National Park and it’s there that she met her future husband, Peter, who was then her climbing instructor.

In her later years, she focused much of her attention on gardening, hiking, volunteering at local hospitals, and spending time with her adored grandchildren. She enjoyed going to the zoo, children’s museums, school plays and attending musicals with them as much as she could, and it brought her great joy.

Throughout her life, there was one thing that grabbed her heart the most: her love of animals. She spent the majority of her years rescuing them and cared for dozens of dogs and cats, many of which had special needs. It was that work that she was most proud of.

She is survived by her husband, Peter Fuhrmann, and was a loving mother to her three children—Doris Traulsen Mount (Berwick, PA), Phoebe Anne O’Leary (Oregon City, OR) and Paul Forrest Coyne (San Jose, CA)—and also a doting grandmother to her cherished grandchildren: Isabelle O’Leary, Maddox Coyne, Elinor Swiger-Coyne and Miles Coyne-Swiger. She will also be remembered by her sister, Alice Walthein (Longmeadow, MA), her daughter-in-law Tami Swiger, and her many extended family members both in the United States and the UK.

If you would like to share your memories, photos or videos of Doris, we invite you to do that on the Memories page of this website.

If you would like to further honor her memory, we encourage you to make a donation to your local humane society or to one of her favorite charities, such as Animal Haven (https://animalhaven.org) or the Soi Dog Foundation (https://www.soidog.org) from where she rescued her beloved dog, Doh Doh.
