Cy's obituary
Cylas “Cy” Olsen passed away at home in Sacramento on March 15, 2026 due to complications of alcohol abuse.
Cy was a kind, loving, and deeply caring person whose warmth and humor touched everyone who knew him. He had a natural ability to make others feel seen and supported, approaching life with empathy and cheer. Sensitive and quick to laugh, Cy brought people together and brightened every room.
After earning his bachelor’s degree at the University of Minnesota in Duluth, Cy went on to dedicate his life to education, moving from Minnesota to California and becoming a high school teacher and wrestling coach. His passion for helping young people led him into school leadership, where he served in administration for several middle and high schools. He went on to earn a master’s degree in educational leadership and administration. Cy’s boundless love for the students sustained him and earned him a reputation as a tireless champion for kids in need. Cy was an enthusiastic supporter of local artists and musicians in Sacramento. He loved natural beauty and the outdoors, from Minnesota’s Boundary Waters to California’s Desolation Wilderness.
Cy is survived by his mother, Rebecca Starr; his father, Donald Olsen; his brother Ian Olsen and Ian’s children, Madeline and Layne; his sister Lacadia Johnson and her children, Wynnum and Ozzy; and his brother Seth Olsen and his sons, Chili and Major. He is also remembered by many extended family members, friends, and the countless students whose lives he impacted.
Cy’s legacy is one of dedication and abiding compassion for the less fortunate. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
