Pastor Wheeler, on behalf of the entire Slaughter (Bobby, Ralph, Cathy and Charles) extend our sincerest condolences. We were all stunned to hear about the loss of Cloria. She was a family friend of the Slaughter family, an awesome woman of GOD, a loving wife and a wonderful mother. As such, it’s difficult to find the right words to adequately convey comfort to you at a moment like this. Cloria will be missed and never forgotten. Our hearts go out to the Wheeler family, and you all are in our thoughts and prayers. Please feel free to reach out should you need anything. GOD bless!

The Milwaukee Connections: Pastor Wheeler Shepherded his flock at Cross Lutheran, an inner city church which was an earlier sister church of Trinity Lutheran where I held many offices, including Sunday School. My late wife, Diane, and I led the Youth Group. and Trinity, under the leadership of the late Erwin Tieman, refused to join the exodus of White churches out of the city, and Trinity was the first Lutheran Church in Milwaukee to integrate it's membership. This was noticed by Mrs Enid Yancey; she was welcomed and her family joined. With that many other Black families joined including her sister's family, the Todd's. Cloria, while in Milwaukee, worked with Dr Wille Little Jr, at MPS. Dr Little retired and went on to earn a ThD from Concordia Seminary, St Louis MO, and was assistant pastor at St. Peter Immanuel in Milwaukee. Cross, at the earlier time, was led by Rev Joe Ellwanger, who along with wife, Joyce were Pioneers in Civil Rights; Joyce even going to prison for her stands, Joe working directly with MLK. Joe, now a young Ninety plus, still is active with Pastor Wheeler and other Civil Rights leaders
One of the assistant pastors at Trinity was Rev Ronald Fletcher, who went on to Kinston, NC. Kinston has a 60/40 percent racial mix; Sixty percent Black, forty percent White. Ron went on to integrate his flock at Faith Lutheran Church, Kinston.
Finally, as Cloria loved to sing, I leave this lovely hymn, as she has now joined the Heavenly Angel Choirs: https://youtu.be/EZnYMo_HM6E?…

I’m in Tennessee yet my thoughts and prayers are with you all🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Dear Ken,
Eric let me know that Cloria had passed. It seems only yesterday that she and I spoke about your forthcoming book.
My sincerest condolences. When time together is counted in decades rather than days, the memories are plentiful and the sense of loss is immense. In the days ahead, I wish you the fullness of life that allows you to recall all that that the two of you shared. Lean into family and friends. Find comfort in their embraces, and remember God’s plan for each of us comes whether we want it or not.
In peace and fellowship,
Earl

Ken Andre and I are so very sorry for the loss of your beautiful wife and our friend Cloria. We fondly remember Cloria as a sister in Christ, the First Lady of Cross Church, and our dear friend. I’ll never forget her and you coming to see me after my surgery and visiting with us for dinner at our home on other occasions. Our family felt like we were your family as you and Cloria and even Harrison was invited to my parents house on many occasion to celebrate holidays or to just visit like families often do. It was a pleasure to know Cloria. Cloria and I shared a bond as grandmothers of sons’ children as we being mothers of son’s have a special bond. It’s was a sweet bond. I remember talking to her a few weeks ago and I could hear the disappointment in her voice about not being able to attend Harrison’s wedding. I wept for her that night after our call. Ken I wish there were words of comfort but as I know well there is none at this time, except to say we loved 🥰 Cloria and will miss her dearly. We pray Gods peace and love be with you and your family.
Sincerely,
Andre and Sandy Chapman
