My family and I offer our sincerest and deepest condolences to the family. Chris played high school basketball for my dad, Coach Powell. Chris was family to us. And we thank you for sharing him with us for over 35 years. May God give you comfort during this most difficult time. We will keep you in our prayers.

What a wonderful and loving husband, father, son, brother and friend-that’s the memory of Chris and so much more. Our sincere condolences to the Cheeks family. Our hearts are heavy but thankful to have known the jokes, laughter and great times with a man of honor and extreme high regard. Much love as Chris is and will always be our brother.

My sincere condolences to the family. I am sorry that I didn’t learn about the Memorial service until after the fact. I first met Chris when he coached my son’s Metro Richmond AAU team. Our friendship began then and lasted until his passing. I know that he will be missed by all of us who were fortunate enough to know him. He was a great basketball coach yes, but an even better Life coach. Rest In Peace, Coach.

Dear Mona & Family: I attended Wilson with Chris. I am also a graduate of Boston College and when I found out Chris was coaching there in 2017, I reached out to share some of my experiences and contacts. Chris was a giver, a great listener, advisor, outstanding mentor, excellent coach, standout baller and great friend to many. He shared stories of his family. He was so proud of Lauren. When he came on recruiting trips to Houston, TX we hung out and I was thankful to have someone from DC here that was down to earth. I was looking forward to Chris’ next moves. He was a cut above the rest! My sincere condolences to the family.

I met Chris in 1987 when he got to VCU. We lived next door to each other in the Chesterfield building. I had Chris and Phil Stinnie as neighbors on one side and Vince Wilson and John Thompson on the other side. Chris and i became friends almost right away. We were both from DC so we had that natural bond. Plus we both loved basketball so a great common interest. Sometimes i would wake up at 2 or 3 in the morning and hear "thump, thump, thump" After i was more awake i realized it was Cheeks bouncing the basketball (again). I would yell "Cheeks put the ball away and go to sleep !" That was kind of a running joke we had. He was rarely without a ball in his hand ! We saw each other regularly at our residence and at Franklin St Gym, where the team practiced. I was a regular visitor to practice and I worked in the ticket office. I also worked all of the men's basketball home games. We saw each other often his two years at VCU. After he graduated and came back to VCU to coach our friendship resumed right away. We talked about college basketball a LOT. Sometimes if we were watching a game or talking about a certain player sometimes Chris would say "he's soft". That was his favorite phrase ! Coming from DC you don't make it if you are soft. Over the years our paths crossed everywhere from the lobby of the Marriott Hotel on Canal St in New Orleans when we had a drink in the lobby together (Chris had brandy), to the basketball office at Georgia State in Atlanta when we were in town and visited Chris at his office there. We also went to the McDonalds All American Capital Classic game in DC to see Lebron James play as a high school senior. Our paths later crossed again at University of Maryland watching AAU basketball together. Basketball and DC was our common thread. He called me and asked for my assistance a few months ago. We spoke for 10-15 minutes and texted a few times after that. He was a terrific guy and friend and neighbor and role model for young people. We are deeply saddened by his passing. I have many good memories of Chris from over the years. I am thankful to have been part of his life and his journey and we will look forward to catching up with him in Heaven. God Bless.
