Cathy's obituary

Catherine Mary Mccurnin, age 66 of Hauʻula, HI was a beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend. She passed away at her home on Friday, May 10th, 2024 with her children, ʻohana and pets surrounding her with love, music, and her favorite smells of Puakenikeni. Cathy, was born on December 19, 1957 in Fallbrook, California to William Robert McCurnin, Jr and Julie Ann Allen.

She was the cherished daughter and sole girl among her three brothers and six boy cousins, and enjoyed a vibrant childhood filled with camping adventures, spirited softball games, and memorable family picnics. Even from a young age, Cathy showcased her nurturing leadership by helping her mother organize events and keeping the boys in line. Her enterprising nature shone through when she started babysitting at a young age, always knowing she wanted a family of her own.

Cathy's journey eventually brought her to Hawaiʻi, where she embraced island life with open arms. She fell in love with the lifestyle, people, culture, and the deep-rooted value placed on ʻohana. Cathy knew she had found her true home in Hawaiʻi. Being the adventurous person that she was, she found a home on the West Side of Oʻahu with her best friend and hānai sister Gigi Davis and partner Manny DeSoto and was welcomed into his ʻohana, beginning their legacy.

Professionally, Cathy was accomplished and awarded, working at Armstrong Builders for the last decade, with over 20 years of experience overseeing occupational safety, environmental, and health requirements for multi-million dollar design and construction projects across various industries. Cathy was known for her strong, powerful and dedicated character.

As a devoted and hardworking single mother, she raised her three children with unwavering love and strength. She would have done anything for her children and grandchildren, whom she was incredibly proud of. She was the type of person who would drive around the island multiple times in one day for the ones she loved. She enjoyed spending time with ʻohana and friends, supporting them at events from celebrations to surf competitions and sporting events.

Cathy also enjoyed being at her home in Hauʻula - entertaining guests, working in her yard, cleaning house, cooking and crafting. She had a unique ability to find beauty and purpose in everything. She breathed new life into old treasures, transforming her home into a warm and curated haven of beach glass, driftwood, her childrenʻs old sports trophies, and other things she collected along her life. Her passion for reinvention and her deep appreciation for her surroundings were a testament to her resilient and loving spirit.

Catherine Mccurnin is survived by her children Duane, Leihulu, and Makamae DeSoto, their father Manny DeSoto, her grandchildren Laura, Micah, Keānuenue, Puamakamae, Kalānoweo, Kaipoʻi, Hōkūwelo, Honua, ʻŌmealani, Wailana, Hokuaola, and Keōwai, her great-grandchild Keaʻau, her father William Robert Mccurnin, and her brother Sean Mccurnin. She was preceded in death by her mother Julie Ann Allen, her brothers Michael and Kevin Alan McCurnin, and her granddaughter, Kapuamālie Lopez-DeSoto.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all of her friends and family she held so dear and to the Armstrong Builders ʻohana. Though our hearts are heavy we find peace in the moments we have spent with Mom. Mahalo for your outpouring of love as we navigate the days, weeks and months ahead. Cathy’s legacy of ʻohana, generosity, creativity, resilience and strength will forever remain in the hearts of her family and all who knew her. A celebration of her life will be held at Pokaʻi Bay on August 10, 2024 at 11am.
