Carla never ceased to inspire me with her energy, drive, determination and civic duty. Her specialty was the moral point - and her voice was much needed. I loved watching her work unfold into the world, the ripple effects of which continue. Though we saw each other rarely, we kept in touch regularly. It’s hard to believe she won’t be here to celebrate her 80th birthday - I miss her. Larry, your love has been a beautiful one to bear witness to. My deepest condolences to you and the family. With love, Maja (NMF)

Among many high school memories, several that were very special:  having Carla be my expert campaign manager for me when I ran for ASB Secretary - lots of good advice and fun; coloring a blond streak in our hair at a party at her house under the watchful eye of her mom; going on a joy ride in her dad’s convertible without his watchful eye - felt very wild at the time; watching her father hypnotize her and others at one of her birthday parties; and having her introduce me to Vincent Van Gogh early in high school, which opened up the wonderful world of art appreciation for me. We are very sad not to be able to drive up to her memorial, but she will remain in my heart. What a good friend, brilliant pianist and gifted writer!

Carla was so nice and high spirited and committed to history, learning, and culture. We will truly miss her wonderful contributions to the world and journalism. However, her spirit will live through her writing, her love, and her commitment to goodness in life.  We all, my wife and I, met Carla and Larry on an Alaskan cruise years ago, such fun on that vacation, and we established a friendship via the net with an exploration of the world of writing, interest in history, and shared excitement of making a difference. Man, Carla made a difference and impact on this world. Thank you, Carla, we love you and Larry.

Carla, I’m thinking of you as you’ve begun a new journey. You were very kind and warm to me when I worked on Larry’s campaign. I admire your love for one another and will miss you dearly. Love you — Jamielyn
I met Carla in Ashland when I had the great pleasure of working on a playreading of her play. I've remained a fan ever since.

Dear Carla,

I have a deep sense of gratitude for your unfailing commitment to us all. Your ability to use your words to heal a divided and troubled world were generous gifts. I celebrate your life as an untiring example of faith in humankind. You refused to give up on us.

I celebrate our friendship and will always hold it dear.

And, finally, as you so aptly and frequently exclaimed,

"To Life!"

Carla was one of the most amazing women I’ve ever known, and I’ve known many in my lifetime. I mean, one of my childhood roll models went on to be president of Spelman College. Her work there earned her the Ms. Magazine cover story in the late 1980’s.

All these simply means that Carla was truly special. She could write in great depth and cut directly to the chase with startling elegance. Now, that’s amazing.

I wish I had known Carla better.

I met Carla 20 years ago when I was editing an anthology on political hope, The Impossible Will Take a Little While. A Christian Science Monitor editor I knew said that her essay,  Behemoth in a Bathrobe, had gotten more responses than any piece they posted that year. It was a wonderfully creative inner dialogue on hope and cynicism and readers loved it when I included it in my book as well.

We stayed friends since and Carla was always had such thoughtful, reflective and distinct perspectives. I'll  miss her.

My heart goes out to you, Larry, and to your family, for the loss of such a very special lady.

Carla and I had conversations about her articles especially those on Bosnia. I am so saddened she is gone.

Dear Larry and Family,

I was deeply saddened to learn of Carla’s passing this past August after her long and valiant battle with cancer. Please accept my sincerest condolences during this time of grief and remembrance.

I first met Carla in 2010 while serving alongside her on the Academics panel for the annual Students of Distinction program, which honors Peninsula School District graduating seniors who have made significant contributions to their fields and humanity. Over the next twelve years, I had the honor of working with Carla as we engaged with dozens of students, hearing their stories and aspirations. Carla had a unique gift for leaving each student with heartfelt words of wisdom that undoubtedly stayed with them as they embarked on their next chapters.

Carla brought an extraordinary depth of knowledge and perspective to every discussion. Our conversations—enlightened by her remarkable wisdom—spanned a wide range of topics, from education to the intersections of ethics, morality, politics, history, culture, and the shared humanity that binds us all. Her insights were profound, and her passion for fostering growth in young minds was truly inspiring.

Carla’s spirit and wisdom will forever live on in the hearts of all who had the great fortune to know her. Through the Students of Distinction fund established in her honor, generations of young people from the Peninsula School District will continue to have the opportunity to pursue higher education—a legacy that speaks to Carla’s enduring commitment to bettering the world.

Thank you, Carla and Larry, for your dedication to uplifting others. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

With deepest sympathy,

Julie Ann
