Brian's obituary

Brian E. Kruk of Chicago, Illinois, passed away on April 29, 2022. Brian was born in Park Ridge, IL on September 28, 1981 to Ed and Deb Kruk (aka “Smother,” nee Lortz). He leaves behind the love of his life, Sarah Jarvis, along with his adoring parents, his siblings, Brad (Brittany) Kruk and Ann (Bill) Porter, and grandmother Dorothy (late Herbert) Lortz. Brian is survived by countless loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends who loved him as family.

Known affectionately to many simply as “Kruk,” Brian graduated with a dual degree in history and psychology from the University of Illinois in 2004. A natural born educator and adventurer, he taught in a Yup’ik village in Southwestern Alaska, then traveled around the world to Sendai, Japan, teaching English for two years. Upon moving back to Chicago, Brian connected his love of education and the written word with technology, leading him to successful careers most recently with LinkedIn and Gong.

Brian defined his life through a distinguished collection of fundamentals: first came family and friends, always remain curious, and adventure awaits.

Brian met Sarah during a rival Chicago Cubs versus St. Louis Cardinals game and they married on September 30, 2016. Bonding over their love for distinctive travel, they created meaningful life experiences through the pleasures of food, drink, family, and friends. Upon Brian’s urging, Sadie Parker (goldendoodle, 4) joined him and Sarah, enhancing the family chemistry with her spark and affection. Sundays were deemed “self-parties” - a sacred time to spend at home with his best companions: a coffee walk with Sadie, the Sunday NY Times, and a home-cooked meal with Sarah.

There was never a shortage of family gatherings, where Brian could be found conversing from the floor, a space that was the most accommodating for his 6’4’’ frame. He enjoyed spending time with family playing rounds of “bags” or Rummy, sharing his favorite shrimp and crudité plates, and affectionately roasting his siblings. Among his friends, he was in charge of dictating what fantastic concerts should be attended, he dominated games of leisure as a sleeper athlete, and ensured the groups’ perfect and imperfect interactions always led to laughter.

This notion of curiosity likely began at the young age of 4, when upon meeting his twin siblings for the first time he asked his parents, “Why’d we have to get two?” His curiosity only grew from there as he became a voracious reader, versed in a vast array of subjects. His book collection rivaled a small library and he relished the opportunity to share new found knowledge from his latest read…regardless if one cared to learn the basics of Bitcoin.

Brian was always up for adventure and although he enjoyed having companions, he was comfortable traveling alone. He had the utmost confidence that he would make friends during his solo travels, because, as it was delicately put to his concerned mother, “There will be people there.” He had an unparalleled ability to connect with others. Partly because he listened intently and sincerely, hanging on every word. Partly because he responded authentically, often with humor, and always with warmth. But mostly because his boisterous laugh and inclusive nature promised an enjoyable time, whether discussing different philosophies and perceptions, playing Euchre, or spending time in front of a (bon)fire and sharing a few bourbons.

The family offers its most heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the outpouring of love and sentiments in remembering Brian. To everyone whose life Brian touched, our hope is that you keep his spirit and memory alive by gathering frequently, laughing often, enjoying good food and drink, staying curious, and finding adventures along the way. Brian would want it that way.
