Bob's obituary
Our dear Bobby passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on September 28, 2025 in his sleep. Bobby was blessed with a loving wife of 40 years, 2 daughters, and 3 grandchildren. He was dearly loved by his family and his warm and joyful spirit was a ray of sunshine to all.
Bobby was born in Hong Kong on Oct 16, 1954 to Robert Chang and Lilien Chang. As the fifth of six siblings, he held a special place in everyone’s heart, bringing joy and laughter to the family. From a young age, he captured admiration for his handsome smile and the incredible personality he inherited from his father. His warmth, kindness, and friendliness made him a beloved companion to his tight-knit group of siblings.
Bobby moved with his family to Canada at the age of 12, attended Magee Secondary School and met the love of his life, Elaine while they were in college. Bobby received his Engineer Degree and Designation (P.Eng) at the University of Saskatchewan. Bobby worked for HA Simon Engineering Company and was a Civil Engineer, just like his father. In the nineties, Bobby and Elaine started Asia West Properties where they jointly built a successful commercial real estate company that provided brokerage, management, and leasing services to the Asia Pacific clients. Elaine was the inspiration and Bobby, the engine behind that made their dreams a reality. Bobby was well-respected and trusted for his fairness and honesty in all his business dealings- he gave generously of his professional expertise and was known for being loyal and diligence.
Bobby and Elaine welcomed their first daughter, Amanda in 1988 and their second daughter, Kristen in 1996. Bobby also has three beloved grandchildren, Chloe, Gavin and Kailee. In the years where they built their family, Bobby was a devoted and doting husband and father. His daughters felt cherished by him and grew up with the privilege of knowing their father would always put family first. Bobby was, self-sacrificial, responsible, reliable, and always the one who could be depended upon- no task was too great for him and he went out of his way to make his girls feel special. Bobby would often say that spending time with his family was “heaven on earth” and his family knew how deeply he meant those words. He loved bringing his family biking, going on long beach walks at Spanish Banks, hiking Pacific Spirit Park with Bailey, eating, shopping, or simply finding excuses to do his girls a favour.
Bobby took joy in accompanying his daughters to their many activities- piano, violin, orchestra, choir, ballet, sports, church, tutoring- and in cheering for them alongside Elaine. Bobby delighted in being present for his daughters’ milestones, never missing a competition, concert, or performance. Family trips to the U.S., Europe, and Asia were treasured adventures, especially the annual drive down the west coast with Bobby at the wheel and his girls asleep in the car.
Bobby was steadfast in his love for family and the definition of a trustworthy man. His girls knew how proud he was of them and his optimism and delight in their accomplishments were the fuel of love for the family. With his grandchildren, Bobby was affectionate and fun, finding a way to make the children laugh and often telling them he loves them, singing the same songs he did to his daughters growing up.
Bobby was optimistic and grateful to the Lord for his life’s blessings. He was a devoted man of faith and a Deacon at Lord’s Peace Chapel. Bobby served as Chairman for church summer retreats and helped organize family seminars to support marriage and parenting in the community. He was beloved in his community for his humility and willingness to serve. Despite various bouts of illness, he would always smile and trust in the goodness of God for the next day. Positive and content, he had a quiet inner strength that cheered those around him, astounding doctors with unexpected recoveries, and his positive attitude in spite of illness.
Bobby was a friend to all- cheerful, pure of heart, never self-serving, and a model of Christ like love to his community. So many in his community remember his sweet disposition combined with steadfast resilience. His favourite verses were Philippians 4:6-7, “ Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”.
Bobby is survived by his loving wife Elaine, their adoring children, Amanda (Grant) and Kristen (Jordan), his beloved grandchildren, Chloe, Gavin and Kailee, his brothers, Philip, David, and Allen, his sisters, Janet and Susan, and his nieces and nephews. He will always be loved and deeply missed.
