We are so saddened by the loss of Anne and Walter. I grew up summering at Kennebec Point, and they were like another set of parents for me, just across the beach with kids our age to play with, grow older with, see every year. More recently we have been seeing Anne and Walter on their magnificent porch for a visit each summer. I am richer from knowing them all of these many years. Condolences to your entire family. With love, Susie Wren and Theo Holtwijk, Georgetown

So sorry to hear about Anne and Walter's passing. Anne volunteered on the neuroscience nursing unit at Boston Children's Hospital, and we soon found out that we both had homes on Georgetown Island, Maine. That led to a friendship of birding, porch sitting, and Walter being supplied with my homemade blueberry muffins. I purchased Walter's boat, which he said was indestructible, and he told me stories about skimming the rocks off Kennebec Point when the tide was not favorable. I continue his tradition of questionable navigation through currents, tides, and rocks with his solid-hull Logic boat and have fond memories of a loving couple who were immersed in the city's academics but at home in Maine's natural beauty. Hugs to the Gamble family, cherish the memories, with love, Mary Poyner Reed

Anne and Walter were supporters of the Pond Island Tern Restoration project from the start. They provided invaluable mainland support and kept an eye on the young Audubon researchers as they came and went and lived on nearby Pond Island. A highlight of our end-of-season bird meetings was a report from Kennebec Pt, in which Anne and Walter reported on the goings-on of the researchers themselves. Hilarious. Always so kind, generous, mentors to so many on the art of life. They will be missed.

As a cardiology fellow at Children's in the early 80's I have wonderful memories of department Christmas parties hosted by Anne and Walter at their beautiful home in the Longwood area with 12' tall Xmas trees! Their hospitality was always warm and gracious. Later, I recall Anne's vigorous efforts to save the lovely Prouty Garden, beloved by families and staff alike. It was a refuge for us all during difficult days and a huge loss. May their memories be a blessing.

Like so, so many others, my life was transformed by Anne and Walter's generosity through their scholarship fund. Because of them, I was able to invest in teaching and bioethics, in addition to practicing clinical medicine, and to relocate with my family to Israel.
Visiting Anne and Walter in their home in Brookline with our rambunctious young children was a special highlight for all of us.
Their constant good cheer and their overflowing generosity, both material and in spirit, will never be forgotten. May their memory be a blessing.

Where to start? Lunches at the long kitchen table at the Kennebec Point house as a child, overlooking Sagadahoc Bay? The smell of Sea&Ski lotion and the sight of cowboy hats as we played on the beach with Anne and Walter's 3 redheads? Shared baseball games as Walter pitched carefully to hit every small bat, and Anne cheered from a seat on the sharp feldspar rocks of the field's stone wall? Most especially, driving the Gamble green Suburban around New England filled with Collegium singers, or Radcliffe Pitches? Those loans of the car led to many many wonderful shared teas with Aunt Anne in her sunny kitchen, ivy twining around the windows. Aunt Anne was my mother in Boston, always ready with a warm, smile and a listening ear. I treasured those days so much, and appreciated the loan of Anne & Walt's car as we traveled the roads sharing music between colleges.
Uncle Walter and Aunt Anne's friendship and support of my mother Judy was a lodestar in her life. I am sure that they are now sharing another good tv series together, laughing at the foibles of the world!
I miss them both.

I only had a chance to get to know Anne and Walter briefly in the summer of 1994. I did part of my sabbatical in pediatric electrophysiology for 6 weeks at Boston Children's Hospital with Ed Walsh, Phil Saul, John Triedman and their team. The Gambles graciously offered me a place to stay in their beautiful home which was a short walking distance from Children's Hospital. This room was usually reserved for medical students to give them an economical (free!) place for them to stay to minimize their medical school expenses, but I was very lucky to have the room available for a 6-week period between student occupancy.
Although the time was short, I was so fortunate to know Anne and Walter and benefit from their gracious hospitality and get a sense of their wonderful humanity. I remember the two of them on a committee for counting and preserving the trees of their Brookline community. I also had the fun and enlightening experience of making rounds with Walter and observe him placing a small battery for a pacemaker on his tongue to confirm the voltage was preserved. Despite the short time I stayed at their house, they continued to send me Christmas cards for many years.
It was a privilege and honor to know these two wonderful people.

With deep gratitude and everlasting fondness for the Gambles, we offer our sincerest condolences. The Gamble Scholarship was transformative to our lives in endless ways, leading Julie to PennMed, where Julie and Stephan met, and offering the freedom to pursue pediatric primary care without the heavy burden of medical school debt. The Gambles became part of our family in so many ways, from attending our wedding in Avalon, NJ nearly 2 decades ago to exchanging holiday greetings every year without missing a step. The legacy of Anne and Walter continues through so many of us who had the privilege, honor, and joy of knowing them.
With much love,
Julie, Stephan, Bianca, and Ollie

Dear Robbie and Jamie, we are so sad to hear about both your parents' deaths. They were wonderful, wonderful friends of ours for years and we will cherish all the times we had with them. We met them in our early 20's just after they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and they influenced our lives greatly in many ways. We will miss them very much. Sending love to you and your families.

Thanksgiving and Christmas festivities at the Alverson Agawam house did not begin until Anne and Walter walked in--Anne bundled up in pastel blues and pinks, Walter sporting spectacular suspenders for the occasion. What new gadget would Walter come up with to entertain the children? Which of Robbie's poetry would Anne share with me as we settled in a corner of the room? Together they enriched us all with their reminiscences, creativity, and affection. They remain in our hearts and continue to be shining examples of how to live a good life.

I feel incredibly lucky that Walter and Anne Gamble became a part of my life 20 years ago when I met them as the generous benefactors of my medical school scholarship. As a young medical student embarking on my journey through medicine, having their support, their mentorship, and their ongoing interest in my future career was invaluable. Some of my fondest memories of medical school were catching up with them at the fall and spring scholarship luncheons and staying at their Brookline while traveling for Boston residency interviews. They soon became like family. As my own family grew they took interest in my children (sending cards on their birthdays!) and my husband’s accordion shop, which Walter found quite interesting. My children were regular attendees at the annual scholarship lunch during their preschool years, and Anne and Walter were always so warm and open and welcoming.
I am honored to have been a part of their lives and shared in their legacy. There are truly no words to express my gratitude for all they have given me.

Thanks to the generosity of Anne and Walter Gamble, I was able to attend medical school on a full scholarship. Words cannot express my gratitude for this tremendously kind couple, who sought at every turn to make the world a better place.

A very kind couple. I stayed at their house for a time during medical school and was honored they let me practice on their beautiful Steinway piano.

Two of my favorite people in the world! I owe much to Walter in particular for passing along his unique and upbeat philosophy to me as a Pediatric Cardiology fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital, which I still carry with me 30 years later. Their kindness, enthusiasm and optimism will be thoroughly missed.

I am honored to have known Walter and Anne as a recipient of their generosity through scholarship and also through the unrelated connection to my late father-in-law, Reverend Robert B. Appleyard. The word that comes to mind first when I think of the Gambles is warmth. Every time I saw them they radiated with genuine interest, care and love for all of their scholars and the impact of this was perhaps even more profound than the generosity of their financial support. It was truly remarkable at such a very early stage in medical training to feel seen, valued and cared for by these loving people who started as strangers and soon became friends to so many. I could go on for hours about what this has meant to me, my family, and the people I have served and treated, but let me sum up by saying that although their physical presence will be missed among us, the warmth and radiant love that Walter and Anne shared will live on infinitely through the many lives they touched. Wishing the extended family peace and solace during this time of loss of these two beautiful people.

Anne and Walter were like a second pair of parents to me (and grandparents to my children). I lived with them for a bit while taking a course in Boston, and will never forget all the years together. So many memories (attempting with Walter to record a two led EKG on a wild hummingbird!). They will be dearly missed and always in my heart.

Anne was my special birding companion for many joyous and adventuresome years. We shared our love of birds but also our shared stories of raising our kids (mine much younger.) Anne always so wise and thoughtful. These last few years of her more challenged days, we made little trips to Mount Auburn Cemetery where she showed such joy and connection with the nature we found there, her greatest joy- the snowdrops.

Anne and Walter were my favorite clients for more than 20 years ... such wonderful, caring folks who did so much to help countless other people in so many ways and places. They invited me year after year to bring the beauties of Nature into their gardens. I appreciated their patronage and friendship more than words can say.

My deepest condolences to all the family, friends, neighbors, scholars and colleagues. These two wonderful souls were a tremendous gift to all of us. I cannot thank them enough for all they have shared with me over the past 30 plus years. I am so grateful to have known them and loved them.
