I went for a long hike today at Mohawk Trail State Forest while Ian was at Berkshire East downhill mountain biking. So many things were making me think of Anna - chipmunks scurrying in and out of a stone wall where I knew Anna would wait patiently a long time to get a great photo of one if they were there; a not-so-great trail map (see above) and minimal signage that wouldn't have mattered if I had Anna, my personal GPS with their excellent sense of direction, with me; a misty and mystical forest with no other humans in it (see below) that I think Anna would have found magic in. I was in the tangled trails the arrow is pointing to above, feeling sad that I haven't seen many signs of Anna lately, feeling lost in general and on the trail, when an owl hooted on the trail ahead of me. I hadn't been sure what trail to take, but something had said that one. I saw the owl fly a little further up the trail. We hooted back and forth for a few minutes and about 5 minutes later it was apparent this was the right trail. Then this evening, the light outside looked strange as evening was coming on. I went outside and found skies with a rare 360 degrees of light of varying lavenders, roses, pinks, and fire-orange and clouds that boiled and brewed and raced across the sky (see above).
