As I prepare to head to NZ for 5 months, Ian Stephen and I decided to do our sometimes tradition of burning the Christmas tree in the snowy yard. Both Anna and Ian love this - a little subversive, a suggestion of danger, a little bit pagan maybe, and somehow very satisfying. Right now fire and the torched trunk of the balsam fir feels like a metaphor for much in our lives - climate change, political change, families' lives changed by fire - literal and figurative. I was reminded though, as we stood in the back yard with the embers and a crystal clear cold sky full of stars, of how our family has watched the regrowth following terrible forest fires in Rocky Mountain National Park over the years. It takes a while, but green emerges from the ash, then a host of wildflowers, so sturdy and gorgeous, and the trees do come back, eventually.
