I was running through Groff Park recently, a home away from home in the toddler years, and had a flash memory attached to this slide. Anna and I were at the park close to Halloween in 2027 so they were 17  months old. They were really agile and (already) fearless. I had always climbed up the ladder behind them until then but the wanted to 'Do it 'self' (a common phrase then and ever since). So I backed off and watched them climb right up the ladder and rather than sitting down when they got up there, they stood up. And took a step backwards and fell right of the top of the slide, hitting various parts on the ladder up on the way down. I was sure there were seriously hurt or maybe even dead for a few heartbeats. But they yelled and cried for about 2 minutes, then wanted to play some more. They had a lovely bruise on their cheek for trick or treating in their Bluefish costume. The memory made me think of how I became more risk averse with the kids over time and a reminder to try to return to trusting their capabilites.

I spent Sunday morning a week ago with a dear longtime friend. We had breakfast, we walked, we talked. We were talking about Anna and she asked if I still get regular 'visits'. I let her know I felt they weren't nearly as common as they used to be - she felt like it might be because Anna thinks I am doing okay. In the week that followed, I was doing sets of short hills on the road behind our house and a good sized bird, clearly a raptor, flew across the street about 25 yards ahead of me and landed in a tree near the road. It had a bright white underside and didn't look like the red tailed hawks that visit us periodically. I tried to get a closer look and a photo, but I startled it and it flew down the hill, right to our house and it looked like it settled in the pine tree in the front yard. When I finished running I heard a bird rustling around in that tree and an unfamilar call. When I looked it up and listened to calls for white bellied raptors in the area, it seemed like it might have been a juvenile osprey - very cool. In the past week there have been a series of outdoor sky and creature sightings, including the rays in the sky in this photo that I saw while running today. I like to think Anna heard me and knew I missed 'seeing' them and came for a few visits. The others are below.
