Walter Shandro Obituary

(October 20, 1931 – December 11, 2023)

Walter (Wally) Shandro of Murrieta, California passed away on December 11, 2023 at the age of 92 in his home surrounded by family.

He was predeceased by his mother, Helen Shandro, age 76; father, John Shandro, age 89; sister, Mary Billey, age 90; sister, Pearl Zukiwsky, age 91; sister, Victoria Fedorak, age 93; and grandson, Michael Shandro, age 33.

He is survived by his bride of 70 years, Lucille; son, Doug; son, Tim (Patrice); daughter, Kim (Lorry); daughter, Kerri (Jim); grandson, Chris (Charisse); grandson, Bryce (Nik); and great granddaughter, Jessa.

Wally was born on October 20, 1931 to hardworking Ukrainian parents, John and Helen, on a farm in the Shandro District near the town of Willingdon, Alberta, Canada.

Throughout his lifetime, Wally was never afraid to forge new trails and face challenges. After graduating high school as valedictorian, he moved to Quebec, Canada to serve as a missionary. Upon meeting and marrying Lucille in 1953, he moved to Olds, Alberta, Canada where he farmed and worked part-time on an oil rig. Following an industrial accident that damaged his right hand, the Workers’ Compensation Board agreed to pay for his university education and he graduated as an attorney in 1962. After practicing law in Alberta for 23 years, Wally moved to California in 1988 where he became a real estate broker.

Wally enjoyed writing short stories and poetry. He loved a good yarn. He would often entertain family and friends with poem recitations that left everyone in stitches.

His appreciation for the outdoors inspired him to enjoy gardening and bird watching. He and Lucille were well-admired in their neighborhood for their industrious hard work that produced such a beautiful yard that people would often stop to take pictures.

Wally loved good food and was an awesome chef; always heavy handed with the garlic.

Over the years, Wally and Lucille enjoyed traveling to many spectacular domestic and international destinations and, in the early years, took the kids along. To this day, an infamous six-week road trip from Alberta, Canada to Daytona Beach, Florida in the winter of 1972 with two cars, four adults and six kids continues to spark special memories for the family.

Wally treasured his faith and it guided every aspect of his life. As a dedicated, baptized member of Jehovah’s Witnesses, he served most of his life as an elder in various congregations. He enjoyed a wholesome rewarding life and a sterling reputation in the community. He died with the hope to be resurrected back to this earth to enjoy life forever in perfect health when it becomes a paradise after Armageddon. Revelation 21:3,4; John 5:28,29.
