Ted's obituary
Theodore “Ted” Earle Harlan, age 82, passed away on January 18, 2025, at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, after a lengthy and courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born on July 18, 1942, and proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Hornet from 1960 to 1964.
Following his military service, Ted worked for many years in power plants. He spent 27 years at Northern States Power, where he took on roles in both nuclear plants and corporate positions. Later in life, he owned and operated two Mail Boxes Etc. stores before finishing his career at the Pro Desk at Home Depot, where he found great satisfaction assisting contractors and DIY enthusiasts. Whether helping someone design a dream deck or solve a home repair issue, Ted’s enthusiasm for home improvement shone through in every conversation.
Outside of work, Ted had many interests. He loved home improvement, landscaping, gardening, and cooking—and was especially famous for his chili, which never followed the same recipe twice. He also dedicated many years to serving as a scoutmaster and youth sports coach for his children, supporting and guiding them in their various activities. Above all, Ted cherished time with his family. He began a “First Friday” tradition at the Minnesota State Fair, an annual gathering that remains a cherished event for his loved ones.
Ted shared 56 loving years of marriage with his wife, Georgia Harlan. He was the father of four children: Melinda (George) Rowe (from a previous marriage), Riley (Stephanie) Harlan, Evan (Kari) Harlan, and Leah (Luigi) Frascone. He was also a devoted grandfather to eight grandchildren: Anna (Will) Culliton, Sarah (Rafael) Feijo, Joseph Harlan, Samuel Harlan, Grace Harlan, Alex Harlan, Sophia Frascone, and George Rowe IV.
He is survived by his sister, Janice Bloom, and his half-brother, Michael Harlan. Ted was preceded in death by his father, Earle, his mother, Elaine, his stepmother, Mary, and his grandson, Carmine. A steadfast husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Ted’s warmth, generosity, and passion for helping others will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
