Susan's obituary
Susan C. Hirano, beloved wife, mother, daughter, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, on April 18, 2025, at the age of 57, after a brave and courageous fight against stage 4 breast cancer.
Born in York, Pennsylvania, Susan brought her intelligence, grace, and strength into everything she did. She built a successful career in real estate, working in the Chicagoland area, suburban Philadelphia area, and Honolulu. Her integrity and warmth earned her the trust of countless clients and colleagues over the years, many of whom became life long friends.
Following her cancer diagnosis in October 2021, Susan became a tireless advocate for cancer patients. Her belief, based on her experience, was that the "standard of care" for cancer can be supplemented in many ways to help cancer patients in their individual journeys. Among other things she believed in the powers of: practicing mindfulness and meditation; supplementing her medical treatments with other treatments such as reiki healing and acupuncture; focusing on diet and nutrition; advocating for herself with her care team by being educated on the latest cancer research; helping her body fight the cancer through naturopathic treatments.
These experiences led her to establish the Susan C. Hirano Cancer C.A.R.E. Community at the University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center—a program that supports and empowers individuals facing the challenges of cancer with compassionate resources and guidance. Where cancer patients can come together and share with each other their journeys and grow in their knowledge to empower themselves. Where cancer patients can find resources to help their mind, body and spirit.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made to an endowment fund that will the Susan C. Hirano Cancer C.A.R.E. Community to ensure that the program she began can continue. Donations can be made to this fund at the University of Hawaii Foundation:
