I was awed by the immense amount of time, energy, and commitment that Steven Wise gave to the task of bringing freedom to non-human animals.  May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him and to those of us who only knew of him.    My condolences to his family, friends, co-workers, and all who cared for him and his great mission - the salvation of those who share the planet with humans.  I grieve too.

I am the founder of Help African Animals, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Uganda that I started in 2020. I am so sorry to learn of the passing of a strong man in the field of Animal Law. His work has been an inspiration for many of us. I got to know about Steve when I started my LLM in Animal Law at Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland Oregon in 2019. I later had a chance to meet him at different conferences where he spoke and some where I spoke, and talked to him. His words and work encourage me to work harder for the animals. I will miss Steve. My deepest condolences to Steve's family.
My deepest condolences to Steve's family, friends and all those at NhRP. What an extraordinary gift he was to this world and for those who can't speak for themselves.
~ Dearest Steven it is with such sadness that I write to you in your passing ~ I wish that this were not the case, however you are now with the Angels and all the Animals in heaven ~ I pray for your family that they find peace in your leaving them and that you know just how loved you are and always will be ~ Thank you for all the work you did here on Earth and trust we all will carry forward all you began for our Animals ~ Much love and kindness ~ McKenna Grace Fisher
I am so sorry to hear about Steven's passing. He was a fierce animal advocate.
The world has lost a true animal rights’ champion. Steve’s tremendous advocacy for animals and his vision for the legal status of animals shifted the goalposts in legal scholarship and practice, as well as raising awareness among the wider public. Steve was also an inspiring teacher with an incredible intellect, but always humble and approachable. His legacy will certainly live on. My deepest condolences to Steve’s family, friends, and to the NhRP team. Rest in peace, Steve.

So so so saddened to hear this. About 12 years ago,  a Saturday morning in Miami, Steven came to speak to my Miami Dade College students about the Nonhuman Rights Project. I knew then and still to this day, how lucky I was to have him speak to my students in person, and how lucky they were to hear him. What a gift to all Life on Earth, he was!

Steve was a historic trailblazer advancing discussions of nonhuman personhood. Steve (a chemistry major at William and Mary) moved from lab to law when he went to BU Law School.

Steve and I first met over a dog hoarding case in Boston. I recall his talks at Boston Vegetarian Society and later working with Steve's opposition in a dressage horse case at a large Boston law firm. Steve and the opposing attorney (with whom I had worked) became fast friends afterward.

Steve once had an office in the same building as the Boston Cat Hospital (where a friend worked).

Steve usually sent me copies of each of his books, including Rattling the Cage and Let There Be Justice....

My personal anecdotes of Steve Wise are curious: his bringing phoney plant-based baloney to a Boston Vegetarian Society vegan picnic on the ocean; enjoying vegan Thanksgiving dinner with Steve and his wife Debra at Boston's Country Life Vegetarian Restaurant, where we discussed his recent law cases and national media coverage; discussing the merits and challenges of deontology and consequentialism in legal and philosophical reasoning; and the amount of work required to (a) prepare a winning case or (b) write an (other)earth-shaking book. The news of Steve's passing was really shocking to me.  I have worked on his Wikipedia article, also (which needs a photo).https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_M._Wise

I am so very sorry.

We have lost a hero.

A great man.

I am so very sorry for you all.

But I know you will carry on Mr Wise's incredible work.

I pray he is now somewhere with all the animals he loved so much.

I have been a marine mammal rescuer and rehabilitator for the past 10 years now. I also have 10 adopted baby orphaned elephants and a baby rhino in Kenya (SWT). My support of nonhuman animals knows no bounds. I have followed the incomparable Mr. Wise  for many years and as I sit here writing this message, I am wearing my sweatshirt with the phrase "Are humans the only animals who deserve rights?" How very appropriate, and yet so very sad that after all these years, courts still won't recognize that non human animals think, feel, have emotions, and are sentient. All of those, perhaps moreso than humans! I certainly see that in dolphins and whales! And elephants. Mr. Wise, you will be incredibly missed and I hope that your family is consoled by the fact that there are those of us out here in the world that supported all that he fought for and will continue the fight in his name.
I am so so sorry. Ever since I first learned about this gentleman I had always hoped to meet him. RIP Sir. Thank you for all you did for animals!!!!
