Sonia's obituary
Sonia Jane Huh
11/15/1971 - 11/28/2023
Sonia Jane Huh, age 52, of Washington D.C., passed away at home from cancer on November 28, 2023.
Sonia Jane Huh was born 11/15/1971 in the West African town of Njala, Sierra Leone. Sonia spent her childhood in Sierra Leone, splitting time between Shenge, Freetown, and Gbendembu. The child of diplomats, she then lived in Ethiopia and later attended high school at Greensteds Independent School in Nakuru, Kenya. Sonia returned to Sierra Leone where she completed her high school education at Annie Walsh Memorial Secondary School. She later moved to Nigeria to continue studies at University of Ibadan and eventually returned home to get her degree from Fourah Bay College, in Freetown.
Sonia came to the Washington DC area in 1997 - to seek refuge from the conflict and instability resulting from the Sierra Leone civil war- where she would remain for the rest of her life.
Sonia dedicated her life to service, through work with international nonprofits, local schools, and health policy organizations. She was passionate about her native Sierra Leone, with the hope of one day being able to assist and enrich the lives of the underprivileged citizens in her homeland. With this same selflessness, she was dedicated to serving, worshiping and spreading the word of God and her savior Jesus Christ. She influenced lives through the ministry she created: Activate God’s Purpose.
Survivors include spouse Stefan Huh; son Mikaili Joshua and daughter Jaya Ariel; parents, Sorie Bangura and Annie Lefevre Bangura; siblings Richard Bangura and Tanya Bangura, nephew David Chochoma and numerous additional family members and friends in the US, back home in Sierra Leone, and around the globe.
The family will hold a memorial service.
