Sandra's obituary
After a long and courageous battle with complications from pulmonary hypertension, Dr. Sandra Lea Hamm Gibbs, age 61, of Macon, Georgia, passed away, surrounded by loved ones, early in the morning on Monday October 25th, 2021.
Sandra was born on November 30, 1959 to the late Charles Augustus Hamm, Sr. and Marie Parker Hamm of Elberton, Georgia. The youngest daughter of eight children, she grew up in Elberton and attended Elbert County High School. She served as Student Council President and graduated in 1977. After high school, she majored in Chemistry at Emory University. She served as a charter member and founding president of the Nu Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She graduated from Emory in 1981 and from Morehouse School of Medicine in 1988. She then completed her residency in 1991 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, where she served as Chief Family Practice resident.
She served the Middle Georgia region as an ER physician for a short time until opening her small family practice in Cochran, Georgia in 1991. She served on the Bleckley County Hospital Authority Board for over 24 years, and worked in her practice full-time for 30 years. She was well loved by her colleagues, staff, and patients. She was truly a "family" doctor.
While at Emory, she met the love of her life, Henry Thomas Gibbs, in 1980, and they married in 1988. They had their first and only child, a baby girl, Lauren Brittany Gibbs, in March of 1991. When Sandra had Lauren, she dedicated her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother.
Both personally and professionally, Sandra excelled at helping others to reach their full potential. She supported them through the many passions and challenges of their lives. Whether that was supporting her daughter through numerous academic endeavors or helping patients to get better, she made it her life's work to improve the lives of others.
Sandra was a very charismatic person who loved to travel. When she wasn’t filling her home with warmth and kindness, she could be found in New Orleans giving the casino a run for their money.
We will miss her greatly!
She is survived by her husband Henry, daughter Lauren, her sisters and brothers, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
