Robert's obituary

Robert Davies Volk, 96, passed away peacefully at home on July 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 10, 1929 in Los Angeles, Bob was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.

Bob grew up in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles and attended Third Street School, John Burroughs Junior High School and Los Angeles High School, graduating in 1947. He then attended Stanford University, where he received a BS in Engineering in 1951 and a MS in Mechanical Engineering in 1952.

Following graduation, Bob spent two years in the U.S. Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant at Headquarters Air Materiel Command, in Dayton, Ohio. A subsequent five-month trip to Europe ignited his lifelong interest in travel.

After the Air Force, Bob spent 20 years in the construction industry in Southern California, including 12 years as a Project Manager for C.L. Peck, followed by 8 years with William Simpson Construction as Executive Vice President of Marketing. In 1978, Bob leaned into his entrepreneurial spirit and formed Volk Properties, a boutique real estate investment firm that he continued to manage for the next 47 years.

Throughout his life, Bob enjoyed a love for family, travel, gardening and community. Over the years he particularly enjoyed long road trips in the family’s Volkswagen Westfalia, hosting family and friends at the family’s rustic retreat on Obstruction Island, WA, and playing dominoes at the California Club. A memorable adventure for Bob was crewing aboard the schooner Morning Star as it won the 1961 Transpacific Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Tahiti, setting a world record.

Bob’s community involvement included serving for over 50 continuous years on the Executive Board of the Los Angeles Area Council of Boy Scouts of America, as well as serving on boards of the American Horticultural Society, the Japanese American National Museum, and the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival.

He was also a longtime member and supporter of the Men’s Garden Club of Los Angeles where he was a past president, the California Club, the Valley Hunt Club, Church of Our Saviour and the Transpacific Yacht Club.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carolyn Volk of San Marino; son Christopher Volk (Jaime) of Seattle, WA; son Alexander Volk (Shelly) and grandchildren Ryan and Emily of Aliso Viejo, CA; son Andrew Volk (Philanie) of San Marino, CA; nieces Carolyn Volk Horne, Betsy Volk Terrazas and Laurie Volk, nephew Kenneth Quinton Volk III, and many grandnieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth Quinton Volk and Henrietta Davies Volk, and his brother, Kenneth Quinton Volk, Jr.
