Bob and Kamil Ugurbil in Bell Labs — with Bob Shulman and Kamil Ugurbil

from John Hopfield and Mary Waltham

How to explain to a sailor that one of his guide stars simply vanished last night, never to return? Bob was such a large influence on my life, and on the lives of students and coworkers.

The advice, help, friendship, love, companionship, and joy that we might have sought from interacting with Bob some evening must be replaced by memories, recollections, and dreams with each of us contributing a part of the stage dialog.

Collectively, we will all remember him and he lives on in each of us.

With our love

John and Mary

To Mark & Diago's entire family I am sorry for the loss of your father, who, by reading about him,  had an amazing long  and loving life.  May your memories forever be with you.
Sending condolences and love to Stephanie and the entire Shulman family.  I joined Bob’s lab at Yale in 1984 and in so many ways never really left.   A truly remarkable human being whose influence will live on through the vast web of connections he formed during his long and momentus life.
