Rick's obituary
Richard Anthony "Rick” Felling, age 68, of Reno, Nevada, passed away on March 29, 2024. He was a beloved father, husband, brother, and friend, who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Rick was born on October 6, 1955, in St. Louis, Missouri, and spent most of his life in Reno, exploring and hiking throughout Nevada and the Intermountain West. He was an intelligent, accomplished, and well-respected member of the community, serving throughout most of his career as the Deputy Administrator for the Nevada Department of Water Resources where he was recognized as the expert on Nevada hydrology and water rights. Prior to this role, Rick worked as a geologist for Battle Mountain Gold, where he led field projects throughout Nevada, China, and Peru. Rick continued to serve the professional community in his retirement, contracting his expertise in Nevada water resources for various high-level projects throughout the state. Since 2021, Rick also served as a technical advisor for the Nevada Supreme Court Commission to Study the Adjudication of Water Law Cases, where he provided his professional expertise as a Practicing Water Rights Engineer/Hydrologist to assist the Nevada court system with improving education, training, specialization, timeliness, and efficiency in their review of complex water law cases.
Outside of his career, Rick was a loving and kindhearted father, husband, brother, and friend. He loved the outdoors and nature, and in his free time enjoyed running and hunting with his dog Pickett, playing golf, hiking, and camping with family and friends. He loved spending time with his children, sharing stories, playing games, and exploring. He was always there to offer guidance and support, imparting his knowledge of the world to his kids and helping them succeed both personally and professionally.
Rick is survived by his wife, Wendy Thomas Felling, his daughter Danielle (Trevor), his son Garrett (Christine), his brothers Bill (Martha), Mark (Diana), Andrew (Betty), and Patrick (Candy), and his sisters Tricia Brooks and Megan Tramel (Lee), in addition to numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father William, his mother Aileen, his brothers Kevin and Michael, and his sister Maureen.
Rick will be dearly missed by all, and his legacy will forever be imprinted on the hearts and minds of those fortunate enough to have known him.
A Celebration of Life in honor of Rick will be held on April 28, 2024, at 2pm at the Hidden Valley Country Club, in Reno Nevada.
