Rangaswami's obituary

Dr. Rangaswami Chandran, born on February 2, 1946, passed away suddenly of a heart attack on December 23, 2023.  He was known to everyone as Chandran.

Chandran was born in Erode in South India. His family fostered a culture of education and  Chandran was an excellent scholar. His father, Major General V. Rangaswami, was a lifelong student and instilled that spirit in his children and grandchildren. Chandran’s mother, Subbulakshmi, was also a very loving and strong presence in her sons’ lives. Chandran looked up to his two older brothers, Loganathan and Anbunathan. While Loganathan continued a military career like their father, Chandran served a short term commission after medical school and then left for residency in America with his wife, Chitra, and 1 year old son.

Chandran was a hard-working and jovial resident. After completing his ENT residency in Cleveland, Chandran established a private practice in Corona, Southern California. He had many productive years in Southern California with a good circle of friends. Chandran was well respected ENT surgeon in the area, known for handling complicated surgeries, and being meticulous and thoughtful with his skills.

Chandran retired and moved to a rural area in Southern India for a few years, where he was a valued member of the community. He provided educational and medical guidance to family and friends, as well as financial support to a variety of causes. For the past 15 years, he spent time in Venice, Florida, living in close proximity to cherished old friends and making new friends, who pushed him to learn new activities, such as pickleball. Chandran enjoyed traveling around the globe, especially visits to his cousin in England and meeting his children and grandchildren at various locations.

He will be remembered for his loyalty, his fierce determination to help a cause, his principled nature, his humor and turn of phrase. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed discourses on varied subjects. Though not a paid film critic, he spent many hours watching movies and giving his detailed analyses. From singing with Tina Turner and the Beatles to wide ranging conversations about history, geography and politics - always with CNN on in the background - Chandran’s friends and family will treasure memories of him forever.

He is preceded in death by his beloved parents and brother, Anbunathan. He is survived by his wife, Chitra, his son, Rangram (Subha), daughter Sheila (Brian), grandchildren, Rohan, Neil, Dylan, Arya and Grant, older brother Loganathan (Suguna), nieces Anbu and Kavi, numerous cousins and relatives and friends who will remember his life and spirit.
