Randall's obituary

Randall Niemeyer was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, friend, coworker and hiking partner.  He was an all-American guys' guy (he loved watching and playing sports) made softer by his girls. He was smart, determined, curious, athletic and, above all, dedicated to his family.

Randy grew up in Zeeland, Michigan with his parents William and Margaret and sisters Pat and Tammi. His childhood was spent working on the family farm, attending church with his family, and adventuring with his friends. Randy attended the University of Michigan where he met many of his life-long friends and, during one fateful German class, his wife, Barbara. Randy’s career took him and his family across the Midwest, Texas and ultimately to California. In 2021, he was found to have a tumor in his bladder that was eventually diagnosed as a rare small-cell neuroendocrine cancer. He fought unbelievably hard for a year but ultimately passed surrounded by his family in Mill Valley, CA on September 24, 2022.

Randy and Barbara were married in Michigan on October 13, 1984 and had two beautiful daughters, Elizabeth (Lizz) in 1988 and Katherine (Kate) in 1991. Randy was a dedicated and unwavering husband, who always provided for his family. He loved being a father, reading to his girls, playing silly games with them, and encouraging all of their ambitions.

Randy loved his career and continued it up until his last few weeks. He started in accounting at Deloitte Haskins & Sells in Chicago and then went on to be the CFO of six companies, most in the restaurant industry, including Pasta Pomodoro, Specialty’s, Veggie Grill, and Back of the House. Randy was so proud that his daughters also found work that they loved: Lizz following in his footsteps with an MBA and business career, and Kate as an ophthalmologist now working at UCSF (the same hospital that treated him over the past year).

After his family and work, Randy’s biggest passion was nature. He often thought of his childhood roadtrips across the country, visiting the National Parks. Once he moved to California he fell in love with hiking, from the redwoods in Northern California to the coast of Malibu. He was most proud of his 14-hour treks up Half Dome, and his wife and daughters will be scattering his ashes at Yosemite in the Spring. He spent many of his happiest hours on the trail, and donations in his memory to Sequoia Conservation Fund are encouraged, or donations to The UCSF Bladder Cancer Research Fund (links below).

Although Randy passed far too soon, our memories of him will endure. We welcome you to leave your own stories and photos of him here in the Memories section as well.
