Patricia's obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Patricia Sullivan Ewing, a beloved mother, wife, sister, grandmother, and friend. Patricia was born on June 27, 1947 in Brooklyn, NY. She died on April 25, 2025, after living with Alzheimer’s for many years. She passed gently, in the embrace of her family. She will forever be remembered for her warm and nurturing personality, her acts of service to others, and her brilliant and contagious wit.
Patricia is survived by her devoted husband, Jerome Ewing, and her loving children: sons Patrick “Phenry” Ewing and Brian “Bonofon” Ewing and daughter Maggie Ewing. She also leaves behind her beloved sister, Margaret Sullivan, and cherished grandchildren Hypatia Snow Sullivan Tata, Wren Wonder Sullivan Tata, and Laurence Carpenter Ewing. She was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Rosemary Sullivan, and her Brother, Philip Sullivan.
A proud Brooklyn native, Patricia graduated from Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School in 1964. She continued her studies, receiving a B.A. in English from Brooklyn College in 1968. Patricia then earned two Masters, first in Engligh and Teaching at Fordham University, and the second in Film and Media Studies at The New School. She was an esteemed member of the Kappa Delta sorority and a vibrant organizer at the Junior League of Brooklyn.
Patricia’s career began in the New York City public schools, where she was a tough — but beloved — English teacher. She then co-founded CVM Productions and wrote/produced many video programs over many years, notably for the Catholic Dioceses of New York and Bridgeport. Later in life, she returned to the workforce at General Electric as an editor and proofreader from 1998 until her retirement in 2012. However, Patricia’s most profound achievement was perhaps when she wrote, produced, and hosted “Jill and Jack / Fiction and Fact” for WNYE-TV, for which she received the New York Emmy for Outstanding Instructional Program in 1977.
She moved her young family to Westport, CT in 1991. A woman of strong faith, Patricia was a devout attendee at St. Luke Catholic Church there. She was also a dedicated volunteer at several organizations including the Caroline House, Girl Scouts of America, and Mater Salvatoris Catholic Preparatory School. In her final years, Patricia and Jerry moved to Asheville, NC where they resided close to their grandson Laurence.
Patricia touched the lives of so many through her storytelling, her acts of kindness and service to others, and her almost supernatural ability to nurture lifelong friendships.
The family will hold a memorial mass for Patricia on May 27, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Saint Augustine Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn, NY, followed by a reception luncheon. We have set up a memorial website; we invite you to visit it here to RSVP for the funeral, and to view/upload any photos or memories of Pat you would like to share.
Patricia’s life was a testament to her extraordinary selflessness, intelligence and grace. Her memory will be a blessing, and her absence deeply felt for the rest of our lives.
