A true friend over many years whose intellect, charm and humor will stay with me. I have the greatest respect for her great interest and achievements in education.
This was heartbreaking news. Carolyn received much admiration, love, respect from many people. She was one of my heroes and I will remember all she did for so many people. I wish family peace of mind.

My condolences to Carolyn's family. I first met Carolyn when we both taught English courses at Hillcrest High School, and we developed a friendship that lasted for forty years.  I visited with Carolyn and Jack a week before the passed away. Carolyn's memory and her positive outlook on life, her crisp sense of so many aspects of living and views of the world, her devotion to public education and the importance to teach children to read, and her generosity of time to talk with friends will continue to shape my life as well as others. She will be missed.

I had the pleasure of knowing Carolyn through my work. Her and Jack have been some of my favorites since the moment I met them. Their love for one another was something so special and every one around could see it. Carolyn was a ball of fire and Jack just took all her sass like nothing. My last memory of her was when she came in just a week before passing - she had me call Jack for her and when he answered he could not hear her so he kept asking who it was on the phone and she said a few curse words and told him "ITS YOUR WIFE. DAMNET JACK. HOW MANY DO YOU HAVE".  She had us all laughing. I am going to miss her dearly. I am praying for Jack and the rest of the family - she was SO loved by all that met her.

Mrs. Hembree was such an amazing teacher. I think about her when I think about school. My memory is of someone who let you wander down your own path for a bit before giving you any guidance.
