Margaret's obituary
Margaret Marflitt born in Gateshead England Oct 5, 1932 passed away at her home in Laguna Woods California, surrounded by her family on Nov 5, 2023. She was 91 years old and is survived by her two sons John and Peter and Grandson Benjamin.
She was born to Robert and Marion Scott and had one younger brother, Malcolm. She married William Marflitt in 1955 and they were together until Bill’s death in 2010. She had two sons, John and Peter born in 1958 and 1960 respectively.
Margaret was a dedicated mother after her sons were born. She joined the Methodist Young Wives Guild shortly after marrying Bill to stay involved in the community. She made many friends wherever she went and maintained many long-lasting friendships.
Margaret had an outgoing personality she was quick with a smile and a friendly word to break the ice. She was always welcoming and warm to family and friends. If I had to pick one word to describe Margaret it would be “good”. She always seemed to be trying to do some good in everything she did. If she had some spare time she would volunteer at the hospital, knit caps for soldiers, make teddy bears for children, participate in fund raisers for charity, the list goes on. She always tried to see the good in others and engage others with some positive words of encouragement and support.
In 1966 Margaret was on a bus with 49 others and the bus driver had a heart attack while driving, she rushed forward to pull the hand brake and with the help of one of the other ladies managed to stop the bus, saving countless lives. But she didn’t stop there. She contacted the family of the bus driver, sent a gift to his son, and offered any support she could provide in their time of need. This is one deed but was typical of Margaret’s reaction in any given situation.
When we first moved to Canada from England, mom was driving her Volkswagen Beetle for the first time and came nose to nose with a police car, realizing she was driving on the wrong side of the road. When the policeman came to the car and heard her British accent he immediately started laughing. Mom was very embarrassed and horrified but the policeman was very understanding and let her go without a ticket.
When John and I were young Margaret and Bill would go camping in the Canadian Rockies. I have many fond memories from those days. We were amazed by the giant Moose and other wildlife from the area including bears. Mom would show us how to bait a hook and fish. She usually caught more fish than anyone else. Whatever we did I always felt safe, back then I was pretty sure Mom (and Dad) were fearless.
Margaret was an Aquadette (synchronized swimmer) for about 24 years. She loved being an Aquadette and I think she likely considered it one of her proudest accomplishments. She had many fond memories at the pool with her friends working hard to ensure a good show. She had her 15 minutes of fame with the Aquadettes when they were featured on the Disney show “The World According to Jeff Goldblum”. They were also used in a music video production and in the intro to the TV comedy “B Positive”.
Mom loved to swim and choreograph numbers for the Aquadettes. She was also a member of the Needlework’s Club, the Daughters of the British Empire (DBE), the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) Sisterhood and the Audubon Society. She loved to knit and made many things for various charities.
One of the things I loved about Mom was her ability to stay calm and carry on. Whatever the situation she would do what she could that was in her control and not worry about the things for which she had no control. I try to follow this example to this day.
In a document on Margaret’s computer, she left instructions to tie up her affairs and at the end she said the following;
“I have had a good life with a good man and good kids and their families, especially Ben, hardly any regrets, which don’t amount to a hill of beans. I’ve lived every day to the fullest with good friends and a love of God to sustain me. What more could I ask for? I love you all.”
