A Prince of a Fellow
My friendship with Mike goes back to 1977 when we met around a table in the atrium of the Peachtree Summit Building. He was working for Coca-Cola’s brief foray into alcohol, the Wine Spectrum, so naturally he was bursting with enthusiasm for everything wine. Not long after we became Orme Park neighbors and fellow Peachtree Road Race runners, although he was always so far ahead that he could take a shower and appear at Mike and Joan Walters’ pancake party before I even got out of the park!
Over the succeeding decades we had many adventures together, like the Spoleto Festival in Charleston with Joanne and Glover McGhee, and summer school at Oxford, England. He had a special bond with our son Gabe who proudly announced to him when we were vacationing at Wild Dunes “I don’t wear diapers any more!”
After Mike and Sue moved in at the end of our street in Lenox Park, they both helped prepare our house sale ten years ago, and then sheltered us at our annual visits to Atlanta. They even stored some of our memorabilia until our last visit in August.
Mike’s domestic history made for a complicated family tree, but as the patriarch he was the great unifier of at least 14 loved ones around the Thanksgiving table. When we were lucky enough to get the Hartmans around our table he always reminded Karen of his family tradition of Brussels sprouts, so she thinks of him when she’s cooking them, i.e. at least twice a week. And his devotion to Beloit College was just typical of Mike; once he was in, he was all in.
It’s so hard to believe that this constant friend of so many years is gone, and irreplaceable.
Farewell and godspeed, Mike Hartman.

Uncle Mike was always ready for an adventure and he loved canoeing from his summers at Two Sisters Lake. He was the fun uncle who brought so much joy to his niece and nephews.

My most sincere condolences to Mike's family and many friends. I count myself among both - certainty as his friend, and in many ways as part of the family. Mike welcomed me as both from the beginning of our relationship, 23 years ago. That fact speaks volumes about who he was, how he treated people, and how he should be remembered. A good, gracious, man who loved his life, his family, and his friends. I miss you.

It wasn't that long ago when I was with Mike in Ohio for Dieter's Celebration of Life. He was such a great Uncle to Nan's kids and a great Uncle-in-law to me. Matt will be with you this weekend. Sending hugs and love...Patty Weiner
