Madeleine's obituary
Friends and family are saddened to announce that Madeleine Crohn (aged 81), of New York, NY, passed away on December 05, 2024. She was surrounded by her friends and loved ones at the time of her passing.
Madeleine was predeceased by her former spouse and beloved friend, Burrill Crohn; her mother, Marie Louise Delvaux Loontjens, and her father Noel Loontjens. She is survived by cousins Laurie Roth, Joshua Bastacky, and Jacob Bastacky.
Madeleine dedicated her life to justice and criminal justice reform. In her professional capacity, she was a fierce and tireless advocate who was the founding executive director of two national organizations. She ran many successful international justice projects and a global campaign, changing the lives of thousands of affected individuals around the world.
In her private life, she was an active supporter of modern and performing arts. Even after leaving the workforce, Madeleine remained an active member of her human rights community, joining workshops and events linked to the issues she felt passionate about. She dedicated much of her free time to watching performances of the Paul Taylor Dance company, visiting art exhibits at MoMa, and to reading.
The memorial gathering (hybrid virtual and in-person event) to celebrate Madeleine's life will be held from on Thursday, February 27th from 1:30pm EST to 3:30pm EST in the New York City office of the Open Society Foundations.
