Luke competed in a Hula Hoop contest at Laughlin when he was part of class 15-14. We had no idea how good he was! The camera pans right to show all of his cheering fans.
Was always a pleasure when he arrived to train at the simulator here at Yokota. His passion for flying was infectious. Happy I was there when he brought his brother over to show off last year. My condolences to you all.

I've struggled with what to w…
I've struggled with what to write for a few days now as words don't come easy and I'm saddened to be writing this now.  Many memories have been generated from the pictures and stories while watching as Luke's fellow Airmen, classmates, and friends came together over the past weeks.  There is no doubt of Luke's character, love of God, love of family and love of life.  I remember meeting Luke and Scott when I first arrived at Det 002, I remember doing PT at Cal Baptist, I remember classes and conversations.  My last year in the Air Force was Luke's first and I knew the Air Force was in good hands with Luke and his classmates joining the ranks.  Charlene, Charles, and I have prayed daily and will continue.  I am confident that God welcomed Luke with open arms but devastated for those he has left behind.  Our deepest condolences the entire Unrath famliy.

My thoughts and prayers continue to be with Luke's wife, parents, siblings, relatives and friends.

Luke was a dear friend to my son, who is also in the Air Force and for that I am grateful.

Luke will be truly missed by so many people who had the honor of knowing him.

Well done Luke, you lived your life well on this earth and I am positive you are continuing to do the same in Heaven.

Peace Be With You All,

Caroline De Jong

I had the opportunity to help Luke and Scott build some flight hours while they were in college.  The look of pure joy on Luke’s face when he was flying was priceless!  When he showed me his FAA pilot certificate after completing USAF pilot training I got to see that look again, so awesome.

Luke is a Hero in many ways but his unfaltering faith in God and his ability to witness to so many people is probably the character trait I will remember the most.  I love you Luke, until we meet again may all your days be CAVU!

Uncle Mike

To the entire Unrath family, I cannot find words to express my sadness from this news.  Wishing you all comfort during this time and in the years which follow.  May each of you find healing as you honor Luke.

Sending love,

Cheyminne Bunke

I had the privilege to be a mentor to Luke while we were cadets in ROTC. I was so impressed with his work ethic, intelligence, and positive attitude. I was an instructor for hundreds of cadets in ROTC, shortly after meeting Luke, I knew he was one of the absolute best and he would excel in the Air Force as a pilot. My heart breaks thinking about what happened, but I take comfort knowing that he knew the Lord and Luke is ALIVE in Christ.

"Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him." 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

I send my sincerest condolences to Luke’s family.

I worked with him at Vandenberg.  I can honestly say without hesitation, he was one of the nicest and the most professional people I worked with.  He never was stressed and always had a cool head about him.  I cannot remember him without a smile.

We all are better for having worked with him,  as his work ethic, integrity, personality and professionalism shown through in all he did.

God be with all of you.
