Lois's obituary

Lois Rothrock-Wilson’s bright light shone in this world from February 20, 1959 to May 27, 2021. She passed away comfortably at home with her family present.

Lois was raised in Hershey, Pennsylvania. She was born in South Korea and was among the first wave of International Adoptees brought into the United States. Lois is predeceased by her mother Ruth, her father Earl, her sister Christianne, her younger brother Thomas, and her older brother Ned James, with whom she shared an extra special bond. Lois is survived by her sister Fay and her brother Christopher.

Intelligent and compassionate, Lois studied social work at the University of Western Michigan, where she met the man who would become her life partner, Graham Wilson. (Go Broncos!) Wherever they lived throughout their life together, Lois and Graham developed deep and lasting friendships that have energized and sustained them in every way.

Each in their turn, the Wilson Wonderchildren, Jessica and Nicholas (Karissa) joined the team, and together the family celebrated the joys and weathered the many challenges of life. Throughout it all, Lois remained her passionate, authentic self, and she was intensely proud of her children for their unique strengths and talents.

Lois brought fierce love and determination to her career as a child protection worker. Working with children and families, Lois served as a competent investigator and a strong advocate. Completing her MSW degree at the University of Toronto allowed her the opportunity to apply her knowledge, skills and strengths in new ways as she transferred into the role of supervisor. Lois was a trusted mentor to many, offering wise guidance with a healthy dose of humour.

Lois loved spending time in her gardens. She was also an avid shopper, leading Black Friday shopping marathons that defied the logic of time. She always enjoyed singing along with Carole King and James Taylor, as well as a wide selection of Motown favourites. More than anything else, spending time with her delightful grand twins, Keira and Rey, brought Lois tremendous joy.

Lois walked with grace through the final days of her time here with us, sharing her story and encouraging family and friends to cherish one another and to hold hope and optimism even during difficult times. She was touched by the love and kindness offered by the many people lifting her up in their thoughts and prayers. She was tremendously grateful for the support of Dr Jonker, Dr. Bruni, the Regional Palliative Consultation Team and her home healthcare nurses, and the staff at the Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre, the dialysis unit of Queensway Carleton Hospital, and the Home Dialysis team. Graham, Jessica and Nick appreciate the thoughtful ways that all who knew and loved Lois have shown their care during her life and in her death.

All are welcome to attend a Celebration of Lois on October 10th at The Mill Restaurant and Pub in Cobourg, ON. COVID-19 protocols will be in place and note that part of the venue is outdoors. Remote/Virtual connection will also be available.

The Child Welfare Political Action Committee Canada is a charitable organization with a mission to advocate for policy change to improve lives and outcomes for children and youth in care across Canada. Lois had a strong sense of justice and believed in the power of education to create opportunities in life. As such, Lois would have embraced the work of the Child Welfare PAC Canada.
