In Loving Memory of a Life Dedicated to Service and Friendship
With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Leslie Jo Olsen, longtime resident of Golden, Colorado, who departed this life on June 19, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on December 26, 1947, in Centralia, Illinois, Leslie was the beloved daughter of Margaret and Robert Olsen and the cherished sister of Thomas Olsen.
Leslie is fondly remembered by her brother, Thomas Olsen, her nephews Jonathan and Samuel, her niece Jessica Taves and close family friend Dedra Smith, many great nieces and great nephews, and her loyal dog, Abbie. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Margaret Olsen, and her sister-in-law, Nellie Olsen.
Throughout her life, Leslie adopted as family many of her students and their families from around the world, extending her warmth and generosity far beyond blood ties. Her distinguished career at the Colorado School of Mines, where she served as Director of International Student and Scholar Services, left an indelible mark on countless lives. Leslie was affectionately regarded as a second mother to many, known for her kindness, honesty, and unwavering support.
A proud graduate of Garden Grove High School’s Class of 1965, Leslie later moved to Colorado, where she pursued her love of languages in college and became active in numerous organizations dedicated to fostering global understanding.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 12, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Golden, 1805 Washington Ave., Golden, CO 80401, followed by an international potluck lunch. The family kindly requests that parking near the church be reserved for the elderly and those with disabilities. The service will also be live streamed for those unable to attend in person.
