Laura's obituary

Laura Terese Camarata (October 19, 1983 - April 7, 2024) was born to parents Mary and Stephen Camarata in West Lafayette, Indiana. A boisterous and compassionate sister with a light heart, Laura was a thoughtful, clever, and creative woman. Laura and Elie met at a college ultimate frisbee tournament, and these best friends were married on September 20, 2014. Their beloved son, Ellis, was born on August 21, 2023. Laura is survived by her parents, Mary and Stephen, her spouse and son, Elie and Ellis, her siblings, Andy (Molly), Katie (Brent), Tony (Ryan), Will (Martena), Vince (Esther), Jane, and 18 beautiful "niblings" (her special name for nieces and nephews).

Thoughtfully independent with a great sense of humor, Laura always found ways to express herself and advocate for the ones she loved. Laura sought creative outlets through improv comedy, music, and drawing. She was a talented athlete, competitive on the field, and boisterous yet kind in her coaching. With family and friends, Laura could be found camping in the woods, exploring new ways of learning by doing, enjoying long bike rides, and meeting avid Star Trek fans. Laura held her relationships dear, sending thoughtful care packages, personalized notes, and fun greetings for every holiday and milestone. She invariably made everyone feel like they are family.

Friendly, outgoing, caring, and vivacious, Laura's dedication and compassion for her students shone through every project, committee, and person she encountered. At work, Laura led by example. Colleagues, students, and alumni will remember Laura's brilliance and tenacity in creating opportunities for academic equity and success. Laura's warm and bold presence in the Department of Epidemiology lives on in big and small ways. From meetings and events to thoughtful advice, from an open door to delicate negotiation, Laura's passion for the academic mission leaves a lasting legacy in the field of Epidemiology that ripples through every corner of the globe where Hopkins graduates now work improving public health worldwide.

GIFTS OF SUPPORT

In Laura's honor, donations can be made in one of two ways:

1. Direct support to Elie and Ellis: Laura’s passing has left a void in our hearts and her household. In addition to sponsoring a bench at Lake Roland in Baltimore County where loved ones can sit and remember Laura and strangers can find respite in the shade, funds for Elie and Ellis will help support everyday necessities as both transition to their new life together without Laura's physical presence. You can donate directly to Elie and Ellis here on the Ever Loved  Memorial Gifts Fundraising page.

2. Ellis’s Education Fund: Ellis’s 529 account is in place to support Ellis’s educational journey.
