Katherine's obituary

Katherine Jo Hinman passed away peacefully on the afternoon of January 1, 2026, in Bellevue, Washington. She is survived by her daughter, Dana Hinman; her grandchildren, Elizabeth (Hinman) Trevino, Charlotte and KC Hinman; and Riley and Garrett Mehl. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hinman; her son, David Hinman; her daughter, Julie (Hinman) Mehl; her brother, Douglas Ruud; and her parents, Otis and Charlotte Ruud. Mrs. Hinman was 83 years old.

Born in Wichita, Kansas, on November 12, 1942, Katherine was the younger of two children. Her family moved from Kansas to Minnesota before settling in Washington State in 1958, making their permanent home in the Auburn and Kent area. She graduated from Kent Meridian High School in 1960 and subsequently pursued a career at The Boeing Company, following in the footsteps of her parents.

In 1962, she married Thomas Wheaton, with whom she had two children, David and Dana. The couple divorced in 1965 but remained friends until Mr. Wheaton's passing in 2018. Katherine later met James (Jim) Hinman through her brother Doug, who worked with Jim.

Katherine and James were married on May 24, 1968, and welcomed their daughter Julie soon after. In 1970, James adopted David and Dana, forming a close-knit family that resided in Auburn for many years.

Throughout her life, Katherine described herself as “one tough Norwegian,” a strength that supported her during periods of profound loss, including the passing of her brother Doug in 1997, son David in 2001, husband Jim in 2007, and daughter Julie in 2023. Her Lutheran faith was a constant source of comfort, especially during these difficult times.

Katherine’s remarkable talent for composing poems and creating clever rhymes became a cherished gift for her loved ones, who treasure volumes of her heartfelt verse marking significant moments in their lives. Her faith provided comfort during adversity, and her infectious laughter and generous nature enriched the lives of everyone around her.

Celebration of life for Katherine will be held at Sumner Voiles Funeral Chapel 15124 Main St. E., Sumner, WA on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 4 p.m. Any gifts of remembrance can go to The Auburn Food Bank, 2804 Auburn Way N., Auburn, WA.
