Karen's obituary
Karen Ann Miller (1946–2024)
Karen Ann Miller of Hawi in North Kohala was a joyful, skillful, and exceptionally creative woman: a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and dear friend to many. With humor and strength, she faced a two-year battle with cancer, passing away peacefully on November 26, 2024, surrounded by her family at North Hawai’i Hospital.
Born in January of 1946 in Hackensack, NJ, Karen grew up in Tenafly, where her love for music began at age six. She became one of the first female students at Clarkson College in Potsdam, NY, and graduated in 1968. Karen’s talents shone in every endeavor. She worked in corporate accounting, taught school, and served as a church organist and choir director, later founding a handbell choir at Prince of Peace Church in Maryland.
Karen married Carl Miller in 1968, and together they built a life in Maryland, raising three children. In her later years, they moved to Hawai’i’s Big Island to be near family, where Karen continued sharing her musical gifts as a church organist in Kapa’au, Paauilo, and Puako.
Karen’s creativity extended to cooking, quilting, and hosting gatherings that brought people together. Her global cuisine and festive quilts enriched lives, and her love for family was evident in the joyful celebrations she created.
Karen is survived by her husband, Carl, her children, Leigh, Carl, and Aric, her brother, Daniel, and five grandchildren, who she adored. She was predeceased by her brother, Alan Edward Politica.
Karen’s lively spirit and boundless generosity leave a lasting legacy of love and creativity.
